Famous People From Bali 

I Gusti Ngurah Rai

I Gusti Ngurah Rai was a national hero who will always be remembered for courageous efforts in organizing and coordinating a military resistance against Dutch control. 

The Bali-born colonel was killed in the Battle of Margarana. His heroism was not forgotten, however. In 1975, Niguel Rai was made a national hero by Presidential decree. There is a statue of him in Bali and he is featured on an IDR 50,000 note. 

Although he was only 29 years old, Nigurah is one of the most famous people from Bali.

Ketut Liyer 

Ketut Liyer was a traditional Balinese healer and spiritual advisor who gained global recognition for his psychic abilities.

He lived in the charming town of Ubud and was made famous by Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir, “Eat, Pray, Love.” Ketut had a special connection with people, and his warm and jovial personality endeared him to visitors from all around the world. 

He is one of the most iconic figures in Bali’s spiritual tourism landscape. 

Agung Rai 

Agung Rai, better known as Gung Rai, was a respected Balinese art collector whose significant contributions to Bali’s cultural scene have helped preserve and promote Balinese culture. 

He founded the famous Agung Rai Museum of Art(ARMA) in 1996, opening its doors for visitors to explore its extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and a variety of artworks made by both local and international artists. 

Rai’s efforts in promoting Balinese art and culture have earned him international recognition, making him one of the island’s most prominent people in the world of art.  

Mangku Muriati 

Mangku Muriati is a traditional-style painter and priestess. Born in Kamasan village, Bali, Mangku is known for her Kamasan-style form of painting which has earned her both local and international recognition. 

Muriati is the daughter of Mangku Mura, who is considered one of the most prominent Kamasan-style painters. She has continued on the same path, excelling not just in Indonesia but also attracting foreigners from around the world. 

Food Bali Is Known For

Babi Guling 

This is a popular Balinese dish renowned for its unique flavors. Babi Guling, which means “turning pig” in English, consists of a whole pig that is roasted with a blend of spices like turmeric, lemongrass, coriander, garlic, and ginger. 

The pig is first marinated with various spices before it is roasted to a golden brown, just enough to retain its tenderness. 

Babi Guling is typically served with steamed rice, sambal merah l, and lawar. 

Lawar

Another famous Balinese dish is lawar, a versatile and flavorful salad made from finely chopped vegetables, grated coconut, and minced meat or blood sausage. 

The traditional dish encompasses various spices, including galangal, turmeric, ginger, and shrimp paste. 

The dish is usually prepared during religious ceremonies or special occasions, and it is served in different variations; the two most common types are Lawar Merah and Lawar Putih. Its versatility makes it one of the staple dishes Bali is famous for having.

Nasi Goreng
