The crisis is often considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. In Russia, the crisis is known as the Caribbean Crisis or Cuba’s Nuclear Missile Crisis.

The confrontation began on October 16, 1962, when U.S. President John F. Kennedy was informed that photographic evidence revealed the presence of Soviet nuclear-armed missiles in Cuba, and ended on November 28, 1962, when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev announced on national television that the missiles would be withdrawn.
