New Mexico is also famous for its chili peppers. In fact, the state is one of the largest producers of chili peppers in the entire United States. The most common type of chili pepper grown in New Mexico is the Hatch chili pepper, which is basically named after the Hatch Valley where it is cultivated.

If you’re a fan of spice, you’ll definitely want to try some of the famous New Mexico chili peppers. From green chile cheeseburgers to stacked red chile enchiladas, there are plenty of ways to get your fix. Just be warned – some of these dishes can pack a serious punch!

Carne Adovada

Every October, the city of Albuquerque plays host to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This is certainly one of the most popular events in New Mexico. It is the world’s largest hot air balloon festival and features over 500 balloons launching from the Balloon Fiesta Park!

The event takes place over nine days and it features mass ascensions, competitions, and evening glowdeos. You can even take a ride up the hot air balloons! The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a must-visit event to experience the New Mexico atmosphere if you’re there during the fall season.

The Gathering of Nations

The Gathering of Nations is the world’s largest pow wow. It is held annually in Albuquerque and usually on the 4th weekend of April. This massive event with more than 500+ tribes in the United States and over 200 tribes from Canada coming every year to take part in the celebration.

The best thing is that the event is usually open to the public, which means you can take part too! The event is a great way to learn about different cultures and traditions. You can also enjoy the many food vendors, arts and crafts, and live entertainment.

The Gathering of Nations is definitely a not-to-miss activity if you’re in Albuquerque at the right time. Or you can plan your trip to New Mexico around it in April/May.

New Mexico State Fair

The New Mexico State Fair is held annually in Albuquerque and it is one of the most popular events in the state. This event features rides, live entertainment, food vendors, and much more.

The fair usually takes place in mid-September and runs for about 12 days. If you’re looking for a fun time while in Albuquerque, the New Mexico State Fair is definitely the place to be.

New Mexico’s nickname is “The Land of Enchantment” and for good reason. With its natural beauty, interesting history, and diverse culture, there is truly something for everyone in New Mexico.

First Atomic Bomb Test – Trinity Test Site

New Mexico is also famous for being the site of the first atomic bomb test. On July 16, 1945, the United States conducted its first nuclear weapons test – codenamed “Trinity” – at a remote location in New Mexico. The test site is about 200 miles off of Los Alamos, New Mexico.

This test would pave the way for the development of more powerful nuclear weapons. That test explosion is said to be around 21 kilotons, which is 1.5 times larger than the bombing incident on Hiroshima Japan. The Trinity test is a significant event in New Mexico history that certainly shape the world as we know it today.

The site is usually not opened for visitation, except on two days every year in April and October. If you are interested in visiting, make sure you check and plan accordingly.

Longest Operational Aerial Tramway in North America

In Sandia Peak, New Mexico, you can find the longest operational aerial tramway in North America. The Sandia Peak Tramway, which spans 2.7 miles, takes passengers up to the 10,378-foot summit of the Sandia Mountains.

The aerial tramway was completed in 1966 and has carried over 25 million people to the top of the mountain. The views from the summit are simply breathtaking and certainly worth the tram ride up.

UFO Sightings

New Mexico is also known for its UFO sightings. One of the most well-known cases is the Roswell Incident. In 1947, a farmer, Mac Brazel discovered strange debris in his field after a severe thunderstorm. He reported his findings to the local sheriff, who then contacted the Roswell Army Air Field.

This sparked a media frenzy and the story of the Roswell UFO quickly spread. To this day, there are still many who think that the US government covered up an alien crash landing in Roswell.

Whether you believe in aliens or not, a trip to Roswell can be really interesting. You should visit the International UFO Museum and Research Center, which features fascinating exhibits on aliens and UFO sightings.

Actor Neil Patrick Harris was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is best known for his role as Barney Stinson on the popular CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

Harris has also won Tony Awards for his work in the Broadway productions of Assassins and Cabaret. He is a successful stage, film, and television actor.

Neil Patrick Harris has appeared in films such as Starship Troopers, The Smurfs, and Gone Girl. He has also lent his voice to many animated films and television shows.

George R. R. Martin

New Mexico is also the home of famed author George R. R. Martin. He is best known for his A Song of Ice and Fire book series, which was adapted into the popular HBO show Game of Thrones.

George R. R. Martin was born in Bayonne, New Jersey but he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1979. He currently resides in a small town called Santa Fe, which is about an hour drive from Albuquerque.

In addition to his work on Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin has also written several other books including the Fire & Blood – House of Dragon series. He is a prolific writer and has won several awards for his work.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

New Mexico is home to the famous Carlsbad Caverns National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is best known for its large limestone caves and extensive subterranean rock formations.

You will get to see stunning artistic work by mother nature, formed by both stalactites and stalagmites. The largest chamber of the caverns is called the “Big Room”, it spans about 4,000 feet and is the largest accessible cave in North America.

The caves are a popular tourist destination and receive over 400,000 visitors every year. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even go spelunking in the caves! There are many trails to explore, and it is estimated that over 30 miles of these natural caves are surveyed.

One of the natural landmarks that New Mexico is famous for is the Rio Grande. This iconic river runs through the entire state and forms a boundary between Mexico and the United States. The Rio Grande is one of the longest rivers in North America and also serves as an important source of water for both countries.

Spaceport America

New Mexico is famous for being home to Spaceport America. This spaceport is the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport and it is located in the southern part of the state.

Spaceport America is where Virgin Galactic – Richard Branson’s space tourism company – conducts its operations. If you’re interested in space travel, this is definitely the place to go!

You can even take a tour of the spaceport and see where all the action happens. In order to visit, you have to book a guided tour. It is, after all, still an active facility. However, there are plans to build a public viewing area that is easier to access and for the public to view shuttle launches.

White Sands National Park

New Mexico is also home to the White Sands National Park. This national park is famous for its gypsum sand dunes, which are some of the largest in the world.

The dunes cover about 275 square miles of land and they are constantly shifting. They’re beautiful to look at and definitely a sight to behold.

You can drive through the Dunes Drive to enjoy the scenery in a more relaxing manner. A round-trip journey spans 16 miles and takes around 45 minutes. However, make sure to factor in time for stops, exploration, and countless photo-taking opportunities.

There are also many different activities that you can do in the national park. You can go hiking, picnicking, camping, or even just take a leisurely walk and enjoy the scenery. Just make sure to wear sunscreen – the last thing you want is to get sunburned!
