The Netherlands is known for its delicious cheese, which comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, and flavors. Therefore, you will find that they are common additions to the Dutch breakfast spread.

Gouda, Edam, and Friesland are just some of the delicious types of cheese that come from the Netherlands. In fact, the Dutch produce more than 700 million pounds (317 million kilos) of cheese every year!

Edam is one of the most popular places for cheese and there is a cheese market that is a paradise for cheese fanatics. It opens every Wednesday in the summer months.

Nonetheless, you can find Dutch cheese in markets all over the country, as well as in many supermarkets. If you’re a fan of cheese, be sure to try some while you’re in the Netherlands.

Vlaamse Frieten (French Fries)


Belgium might lay claim to the invention of French fries, but the Dutch certainly know how to cook them! In the Netherlands, they are called ‘Vlaamse Frieten’ and are usually served with a variety of sauces.

One of the most popular sauces is mayonnaise, but other favorites include ketchup, satay sauce, and curry ketchup.

Bitterballen is a Dutch snack that consists of a ball of meat ragout covered in breadcrumbs and deep-fried. They are usually served with mustard for dipping and are the perfect snack to eat with a drink.

Bitterballen originates from the city of Rotterdam and is now popular all over the Netherlands. You’ll find them in most bars and cafes, as well as in many supermarkets.

If you’re feeling brave, you can even try making your own bitterballen at home! It is not actually that difficult.



If you’re not a fan of licorice, the Netherlands is probably not the country for you! This intensely flavored sweet is extremely popular here and can be found in many different forms.

Drop is the most common type of Dutch licorice and comes in a variety of flavors, such as salmiak (salty), mint, aniseed, and fruit.

Koningsdag (King’s Day)


Koningsdag (King’s Day) is a national holiday in the Netherlands that is celebrated on April 27th. The holiday was originally called Queen’s Day, but was renamed when King Willem-Alexander ascended to the throne.
