Planning a Trip to San Diego
This itinerary is packed with the best stops, but you can check out our guide to the top things to do in the city to customize. You’ll also want to look at hotel options in the best areas, easy day trips from San Diego, and some delicious food tours that pair perfectly with your route especially if you’re visiting with kids.
San Diego Day 1
Beakfast at Hash House A Go Go
- Location: 3628 Fifth Ave
- Suggested Time: 7:30 am – 8:30 am
Known for their “twisted farm food,” Hash House A Go Go has some really creative takes on classic breakfast dishes, from their famous sage fried chicken and waffles to massive hashes loaded with fresh ingredients.
Their signature dishes, like the towering pancake stacks or crispy bacon waffles, are perfect for sharing or tackling solo if you’re feeling brave. Trust me, you’ll want to fuel up for the big day ahead, there’s plenty of walking!
Head early at San Diego Zoo
- Distance from Hash House: 7 min drive
- Suggested Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
The San Diego Zoo is a classic for any traveler exploring the city. Right in Balboa Park, this renowned zoo spreads 100 acres and has thousands of animals from around the world. They have quite a focus on conservation and education, so it’s also a good opportunity to learn about efforts in protecting endangered species.
The day pass is the way to go. It’s flexible and gives you direct entry, so make sure to book your tickets early to save time from queueing.
I recommending using the bus tour for an overview of the grounds, or take the Skyfari Aerial Tram for a bird’s-eye view of the park. But you still want to wear your comfy shoes cuz much of the exploring will still be on foot! Some must-see highlights are the Elephant Odyssey, Polar Bear Plunge, and the Lost Forest.
If you find 3 hours to be too long for the zoo, head to Balboa Park whenever you like (it’s the next stop) and start exploring earlier because there’s tons of activities you can do there.
Lunch at Panama 66
- Location: San Diego Museum of Art’s Sculpture Garden
- Distance from San Diego Zoo: 9 min walk
- Suggested Time: 12:30 – 1:30 pm
For a laid-back lunch in a vibrant, artistic setting, Panama 66 is a good option. Their menu has a variety of fresh, locally sourced dishes, from salads and sandwiches to heartier options like artisan burgers.
This is the kind of place where you can linger a little longer while enjoying the serenity of Balboa Park. If you’re lucky, you might even catch some live music.
Roam around San Diego’s Cultural Gem: Balboa Park
- Suggested Time: 1:30 – 2:30 pm
Balboa Park is a cultural hotspot with history, art, nature, or whatever floats your boat. You’ll find beautiful gardens, Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, and a bunch of museums spread over that 1,200 acres of land. The park has plenty of walking paths so you can even just go for a walk.

Don’t try to see everything in one day! Balboa Park is massive, and you’ll enjoy it more if you pick a few highlights that match your interests. Consider getting a Balboa Park Explorer Pass if you plan to visit multiple museums, and be sure to check the park’s calendar for special events and performances happening during your visit!

Dinner at Puesto or The Fish Market
- Location: Seaport Village / Tuna Harbor
- Suggested Time: 7:00pm
Cap off your first day with a nice dinner by choosing between two fantastic options: Puesto or The Fish Market.
It’s always a tradition for me to try some seafood when I’m visiting a port city or village. The Fish Market is renowned for its fresh catches. It is located right along the bay (Tuna Harbor) and they serve a variety of seafood dishes, from perfectly grilled fish to indulgent clam chowder and oysters on the half shell.
The waterfront view is a real bonus, you can enjoy your meal with a glass of wine or a craft beer while soaking it in.
If seafood is not your thing, consider Puesto for a modern twist on Mexican cuisine . Their signature crispy cheese tacos, filled with everything from tender filet mignon to juicy shrimp, are a must-try. Pair your meal with one of their handcrafted margaritas or a refreshing agua fresca to complete the experience.
San Diego Day 2
Day 2’s highlight is the whale watching cruise and your itinerary is going to be very dependent on it. This is because the cruises sell out fast, and you want to book it as early as possible to lock in your time. Then plan the rest of the day around it.
So most of the locations here are flexible to change or spend more time in.
