The day pass is the way to go. It’s flexible and gives you direct entry, so make sure to book your tickets early to save time from queueing. 

I recommending using the bus tour for an overview of the grounds, or take the Skyfari Aerial Tram for a bird’s-eye view of the park. But you still want to wear your comfy shoes cuz much of the exploring will still be on foot! Some must-see highlights are the Elephant Odyssey, Polar Bear Plunge, and the Lost Forest.

If you find 3 hours to be too long for the zoo, head to Balboa Park whenever you like (it’s the next stop) and start exploring earlier because there’s tons of activities you can do there.

Walk to Seaport Village and Ride the Historic Carousel

It’s always a tradition for me to try some seafood when I’m visiting a port city or village. The Fish Market is renowned for its fresh catches. It is located right along the bay (Tuna Harbor) and they serve a variety of seafood dishes, from perfectly grilled fish to indulgent clam chowder and oysters on the half shell. 

The waterfront view is a real bonus, you can enjoy your meal with a glass of wine or a craft beer while soaking it in. 

If seafood is not your thing, consider Puesto for a modern twist on Mexican cuisine . Their signature crispy cheese tacos, filled with everything from tender filet mignon to juicy shrimp, are a must-try. Pair your meal with one of their handcrafted margaritas or a refreshing agua fresca to complete the experience. 

San Diego Day 2

Day 2’s highlight is the whale watching cruise and your itinerary is going to be very dependent on it. This is because the cruises sell out fast, and you want to book it as early as possible to lock in your time. Then plan the rest of the day around it.

So most of the locations here are flexible to change or spend more time in.

Cocina’s Del Monte
