Nashville is known for its rich history of country music, which is mainly why it earned the nickname ‘Music City’. Country music is deep-rooted into the city’s culture, so much so that it is the most prominent cultural heritage of Nashville.

The city is packed with places that are famed for hosting country music performances like the Ryman Auditorium.

The annual CMA Music Festival, which brings together thousands of country music fans from around the world, is held here. Plus, there are museums that preserve and celebrate the history and culture of country music, such as the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Nashville played a huge role in the Civil Rights Movement, first for being the home of historically black colleges and universities that are known for activism.

The city also had one of the first sit-in protests in the country, which was done by African-American college students — members of the Nashville Student Movement — in downtown Nashville in 1960.

One of the most prominent activist groups during the Civil Rights Movement was the Nashville Student Movement, whose members were regarded as the most disciplined and effective among the student movement participants during 1960.

Nashville has multiple nicknames, one of the famous ones being ‘Athens of the South’ — a name that represents the city’s strong educational institutions, which is often compared to ancient Athens, the city of learning.

Since the phrase was popularized in the 19th century by Philip Lindsley, the then President of the University of Nashville, the city has tried to replicate some of the famous architecture in Athens. One of the most renowned replicas is The Parthenon, a top landmark located in Centennial Park.

A music hub and tourist favorite, Downtown is one of the most vibrant districts Nashville is known for. It is the top destination for country music lovers and visitors interested in the food and entertainment the city offers.

Downtown is home to several famous landmarks in Nashville, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Johnny Cash Museum, and many others.  

A stroll on Broadway Street exposes you to some of Nashville’s best, restaurants, and bars. You can attend concerts headlined by top musicians at the 1892 Ryman Auditorium, or decide to further wander the districts to take its beautiful architectural sights.

Many distillery and brewery tours in Nashville also frequent this area as you will find some of the proud local distilleries located around this district.

East Nashville

Just across the river from downtown is the east side of Nashville – a historic neighborhood renowned for its nightlife scene, arts, and food.

During the day, East Nashville is a wide canvas, with plenty of murals and paintings exhibited on the street. At night, the laid-back neighborhood is brought to life by bars and dining that serve craft beer and foods Nashville is famous for.

Although it is a laid-back residential neighborhood, visitors are promised an interesting walking tour of the area, as it is packed with historic buildings of varying architectural styles.

Don’t leave Nashville without shopping in, at least, one of the stores in this neighborhood, which are some of the best in the city.

Belmont-Hillsboro Village

This calm neighborhood in Nashville is known for its student population and historic architecture. It is located along Belmont Boulevard in Hillsboro Village.

The neighborhood is packed with businesses, such as cafes, eateries, and fancy boutiques that cater to the needs of the indie-fascinated students that patronize them.

Some notable historic buildings in the area include the Belmont Mansion(now serving as a museum) and the Social-Religious Building on the campus of Roger Williams University.

The magnificent building stands impressively at the foot of Capitol Hill, stretching 137,000 square feet – one of the largest museums in the US.

One of the well-known museums in Nashville honors and preserve the rich heritage of country music. Nashville’s vibrant music scene has deep roots in country music, hence the effort to celebrate country musicians who have significantly impacted the genre.

With over 2 million artifacts, it is the world’s largest repository of country music. The museum houses memorabilia such as guitars, rhinestone stage costumes, iconic handwritten manuscripts, and films that offer insights into the people that have shaped the course of country music.

Belmont Mansion

Belmont Mansion, also known as Acklen Hall, is a historic mansion that is widely considered the largest building in Tennessee before the Civil War. The mansion was owned by Joseph and Adelicia Acklen, who built it from 1849 to 1853.

The mansion was the central attraction in the Acklens’ 180-acre summer estate, which also featured stunning gardens and a zoo. Since 1890, the Belmont mansion has served as the home of several educational institutions, including Belmont University.

Visitors are offered detailed tours of the elaborate interior of the building, exhibiting exquisite parlors and Venetian-glassed windows and doors. It is one of the most elegant historic places Nashville is known for.

Constructed between 1845 and 1859, the building is one of the oldest working capitols in the United States.

Tennessee Titans

The franchise was established in 1959 and the team, originally known as Houston Oilers, played its first season in 1960. Currently, the Titans play their home games at the Nissan Stadium.

Since its establishment, the Titans have played in the Super Bowl once. They have registered several titles in their name, including two league championships and eleven division championships.

Nashville Predators

Another sports team Nashville is known for is the Bridgestone Arena-based Predators. The Predators are a hockey team that competes in the National Hockey League(NHL), where they’ve played since the 1998-99 season.

Dolly Parton

Country music icon, Dolly Parton is one of the most famous people from Nashville.

Dolly was born in 1946 in Sevier County, Tennessee, where she was raised and discovered her singing talent. She decided to move to Nashville in 1964 and soon started making waves as a country singer and songwriter, thanks to the influence of the supportive country music community in Nashville.

Some of the numerous hits Parton has produced over the years include ‘Jolene’, ‘9 to 5’, and the evergreen ‘I Will Always Love You’. She has been recognized and honored with several awards, including nine Grammy Awards.
