What To Expect During Key West Food Tours

If you’ve never set foot in Key West or experienced a Key West food tour, you might have some questions about how things will go. You’ll have many different tour options from walking food tours to scenic cruises with snacks. As such, make sure you read the details carefully and contact the tour company with any questions you might have.

Even so, you can expect good food and sightseeing on every food tour! Make sure you know where you’re expected to meet your guide or if you’ll be picked up/dropped off at your hotel. After that, all there’s left to do is enjoy the tour! But what does that entail?

Excellent Food: As you’d expect with Key West culinary tours, you can expect some good food! Many tours in Key West will feature the famous key lime pie and the most well-known spots, but others will take you off the beaten path for other flavors. In either case, you’ll have some tasty food in Florida, but make sure you check the menu if you want specifics beforehand!

Expert Guide: One of the best parts of a food tour is getting to know your guide! These are knowledgeable, friendly people who want to make sure you enjoy your food tour to the fullest.

Take advantage of their knowledge by bringing your questions! Plus, many Key West food tours have smaller tour groups, capped at 15 participants, which allows you to spend more time with your guide and get even more local knowledge.

Sightseeing: Key West walking food tours are especially good for sightseeing! As you go from location to location, you’ll get to enjoy iconic sights around the city and hear accompanying facts from your guide.

Keep in mind that there’s always a trade-off between distance covered and depth explored. While you might see more in a car-based tour, you might get a better feel for the place on foot. Know what experience you want and what you’re looking to see before you book!

FAQ About Key West Food Tours

What food is Key West known for?

Above all other foods, Key West is known for key lime pie. Most food tours will include this dish in their offerings, but if you really want to try it, make sure you take a close look at the food samples before booking. There are also many other interesting foods in Key West on offer!

How long is a Key West food tour?

Food tours can range in length from 1.5 – 3 hours, so it’ll depend on what tour you take. Make sure you pay attention to the specifics of the tour you booked, so you know how to plan the rest of your day.

Are drinks included on Key West food tours?

As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t expect drinks to be included in your tour. Unless it is mentioned in the tour overview, drinks generally come at an additional expense. Since Key West is often sunny and hot, we recommend you take along a water bottle at least and check with your tour provider, if you think you’ll need more drinks along the way!

What if I have allergies or dietary restrictions?

Some tour companies have accommodations for guests with allergies and dietary restrictions. However, not all do. The best thing to do is read the tour details carefully before booking and make your restriction/allergy known beforehand. We also recommend reminding the tour provider a day or two before your tour, just to make sure they have everything in order.

Should I eat before going on a Key West food tour?

Generally, you don’t need to eat before a Key West food tour! On average, you can expect between 3 – 5 food samplings, which is normally enough to stand in for a meal. However, this does vary by tour.

For example, tours focusing more on Jimmy Buffett or Hemingway may not offer as much food as a classic food tour. Take a look at the itinerary before you head out, that should make it clear how much (if any) you should eat beforehand.
