Visiting Cam Thanh Coconut Village In Hoi An: Is It Worth Going? [Beware Scam]

Here’s my TLDR (summary) having been to Hoi An’s famous coconut boats through the Bay Mau Coconut Forest:

  • I think it’s worth going if you have time. But if your itinerary is already bombarded with stuff and you are struggling to fit it in, it is ok to give it a miss.
  • I booked my coconut boat ride through Klook, and think it’s the best option to do it.
  • Best way to get there is by ordering a GRAB (ride hailing app) but beware of the common “scam” (Read below)

My Experience In Bay Mau Coconut Forest

The Cam Thanh Coconut Village or easier known as the Hoi An Coconut Village (because not many of us remembers all the Vietnamese names) is a popular ecotourism spot with these beautiful dense coconut groves.

That natural landscape in the Bay Mau Coconut Forest is my main reason for visiting. It’s a pretty special scene even within Asian. Not one of those things you see everywhere.

Tourism In Hoi An’s Coconut Village

First thing to know is that this is a very touristic spot. There is almost no other attractions around the area. So if you are coming here, you are coming for this.

Despite this being a traditional village with actual inhabitants, this is not the place to see tranquil, quiet local life in my experience. You have might have better luck in the rice fields if that’s what you are looking for.

Tourism has developed drastically here and it’s a touristic spot with big tour groups coming in and out. There is nothing wrong with that – just have the right expectations.

How To Get To Cam Thanh Coconut Village

If you are not taking any package tour that includes transportation from your accommodation, then calling a Grab Taxi or Grab Bike will be the most logical option.

It isn’t exactly too far from the old town area. A grab bike takes around 20 minutes max and cost me around USD$1+ one-way. That’s the most convenient and cost-effective way to get there.

IMPORTANT! TAKE NOTE!

The most important thing to note if you are taking GRAB – know that many of the coconut boat operators work with drivers to bring them customers.

So it is likely (which happened to me as well) that the Grab driver will try to take you to a specific operator whom they work with, even if you have marked a different destination on the app.

As I said, there is almost no other highlight attractions in the area apart from the coconut village. So they know you are visiting for this specific purpose. And the boat ride in Bay Mau Coconut Forest is the main highlight here.

As such, if you have a booking beforehand, mention that to the driver so he knows he cannot “sell you off” to another operator LOL.

Make sure you DOUBLE CHECK the location on Google Maps when they are dropping you off. Don’t just get off.

I thought things felt wrong when my driver started to call out to one of the staff where he’s stopping. I quickly checked Maps (without getting off the bike) and told him this is not the right place and I already have a booking. He then sheepishly apologized and drove me to the right spot.

The Coconut Boat Ride Experience

Which Operator To Go With

This is a main reason why I prebooked through Klook.

There’s a lot of reviews and comments about tourists getting ripped off in terms of pricing. The one on Klook has a good review, plus the price is cheap or in a reasonable range compared to others I’ve heard getting scammed.

If you don’t want to have to hunt around and negotiate prices under the intense heat, then I recommend just booking through Klook. The system do need a min. of 2 pax if you are buying just the boat ride.

So if you are alone like me, just get the boat + coconut option which allows a 1 pax booking; still cheap in my opinion.

At the entrance of the village, there’s an entry ticket booth and they might ask you to pay an entry fee. I didn’t get asked, but if you have a Klook booking, just show them that and you don’t have to pay it.

The Basket Boat Experience

The “check-in” was pretty seamless. I dropped off at Hahn Coconut (the operator they work with) which has a Klook sign outside. They just checked and took a photo of the booking on my app, and we’re ready to go.

The experience you get essentially depends on your “boat captain”. Overall, I feel mine was pretty good, covering all the aspects I expected. The only big downside was that he smoked a couple times while rowing the boat, which I did not enjoy but appreciated that it was hard work after trying it myself.

The three main performances that you will see are:

  • Boat Spinning: They will take you to a spot where there are people performing “acrobatics” with the coconut boat, basically spinning it round and round.
  • Karaoke: Appealing to all the Asian tour groups, this is a loud karaoke singing session.
  • Net Casting: You will get to see a fisherman setting up a fishing net and flinging it out like they traditionally would for fishing.
coconut-boat-spinning-performance

Some optional things that you might/might not experience:

  • The boat captain will take you to photo spots and help you take photos.
  • They show you how to row the boat and let you attempt it. (Spoiler: It’s very difficult, for me at least)
  • They might do the acrobatic spinning a few times to let you experience the thrill.

What I liked about mine was that he did not stick with big groups. I did not feel like we were constantly jostling for spots like some others experienced. My boat really only joined groups when watching the performances.

fishing-in-coconut-forest

He also did not ask for tips, nor did I get asked to tip the performers, which I know many travelers have complained about on their rides.

Personally, apart from the boat spinning, I didn’t really care for the other performances. My main objective was to admire the landscape which I certainly did.

I would love to have heard more insights about the place and tradition. That said, I also expected that this wasn’t a tour for that.

Most of the boat rowers only speak basic English, and honestly, most tourists probably aren’t here for factual information. A lot of the big tour groups really enjoy the merry making, photo taking and music. It’s all part of the fun for them.

So that is what the operators are used to providing, and thus what you should expect when doing this by yourself.

I also don’t think the ride was a full hour, but I thought the time frame was just nice. I probably wouldn’t want to spend a full hour on the boat anyway.

Coconut juice at the end was a good conclusion (included if you booked the boat + coconut option)

When To Visit?

For the coconut boat ride, I recommend doing it early in the morning. I got there around 8+am and was probably one of the first boats out. As I was ending my ride, it got increasingly crowded with big tour groups.

It is going to be hot, so the earlier the cooler. You definitely don’t want to visit right in mid day if you can help it. Expect to be exposed under direct sunlight for most of the ride.

You should be given one of those Vietnamese style hat to wear during the ride, but definitely still apply sunblock. And I recommend bringing a bottle of water. Sunglasses is a good accessory to have as well, although I didn’t end up using mine.

Then I went for a satisfying breakfast at one of my favorite restaurants in Hoi An on my way back to town.

Things To Do In Cam Thanh Coconut Village

Basket Boat Ride In Bay Mau Coconut Forest

As mentioned, this is the main activity here, and what most tourists are here for. If you are already here in the village, then it is a no-brainer to at least try it. For the price I paid, I think it’s cheap for a boat ride on a uniquely shaped boat through a rather special landscape.

Vietnamese Cooking Classes

The other popular thing to do in Hoi An coconut village is taking a cooking class. You will find many tours combining both activities, including on Klook. However, there are places offering culinary classes in town as well, so it’s not the only spot to do it.

Visit Or Not?

I think it’s a pretty nice experience to go for. The landscape is stunning and worth seeing from the waters. Great photo opportunities for sure. But it is also not such a must-do that you go out of the way for if you are limited on time.

14 Amazing Cafes In Hoi An To Visit [Incl. Laptop Friendly]

When you visit Hoi An, you will find there are countless cafes around. Most of them in the old town are really beautiful and charming, and I will cover some of my favourites.

That said, many of them are also filled with tourists. So before that, I want to share a few Hoi An cafes that have less-touristy pricing and are still pretty great. I see more locals in them vs tourists.

Underrated Cafes Near Old Town

For reference, you can find coconut coffee at 35K at some of these cafes when others are charging 50-60K in the old town (Prices will increase but you can see the approx difference). And they are in pretty central locations with nice spaces.

Nang Coffee Hoi An

This is a spacious cafe that covers a whole garden with a refreshing pool in the centre that you can even take a dip in (until 4pm). It’s like an oasis within the town.

The whole environment is beautifully decorated from the natural greenery to the simple wooden furnishings and huts. All the seats come shaded with umbrellas so don’t worry about the Hoi An sun. Even then, there are indoors areas with air conditioning, so you can take your pick on what you like.

Or you can do it like me, and visit in the evening. I reckon it is less crowded at night, and they also open till 10pm.

While it is primarily a cafe, they also do serve food. Despite the unique environment, prices here are fair and standard. I did not try the food since I visited after a super satisfying dinner at one of the popular Hoi An restaurants.

But I ordered the salt coffee and it’s just the perfect conclusion with a thick, creamy top layer. This will perhaps be my pick for favorite salt coffee because of the cream’s texture.

The cafe is also a good option if you want to work on your laptop. The wifi here is super fast.

If you have been around Vietnam, you know short stools and tables are a mainstay in local cafe culture. Many of the outdoor seats here are similar height which is not great for laptops.

But the indoor seatings are a different story, and you will find power sockets around as well. Some of the outdoor tables by the fence are also proper seating.

  • They do not take card payment, but TP Bank is right round the corner.
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 169/143 mbps

Hi Phim Cafe

Located near the old town, don’t be deceived by the appearance of this plain looking Hoi An cafe. It  might not seem super enticing from out front but this is a quiet, spacious place, credit to the high ceiling.

The internet is super fast here. Several tables are great for working with power sockets next to them. Most of the space is open air, but there are also air-conditioned rooms. The interior is simple but still aesthetically nice.

The coffee here is good, and much cheaper than your old town cafes. I see locals coming here to take a coffee break from work before heading out again. They don’t serve food, only drinks.

A great option whether you want to come and do some work, or chill for a bit. This is the type of place I will come repeatedly if I’m staying long term in Hoi An, and looking to work from a cafe.

  • They do not take card payment here
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 283/265 mbps

An’s Coffee & Milk Tea

This is a homestay and cafe that’s right on one of the bustling streets near old town.

Food option is more limited here to breakfast stuff, so I recommend coming mainly for the drinks. They have a lot of drink options, ranging from classic coffee options to different variations of milk teas.

You can even mix and match toppings. I went with a custom order of Bubble Milk Tea with Egg Cream, which admittedly was very sinful :p The bubbles (tapioca balls) here are soft and tangy.

It is rather spacious place with plenty of seats. You have the short lounge chairs and tables by the road which locals love, or you can go indoors with great tables for working. And further in, you have an air conditioned space.

There are many power sockets around the area. I also like the the chairs indoors are cushy, thus comfortable to sit for hours. Also, at 400+ mbps, the wifi is the fastest I have seen in Hoi An.

Easily a place I will come back to work as it’s cheap and well facilitated.

You can even book their homestay. I haven’t stayed here before, so I can’t comment on the rooms, but the location is super convenient.

Cafes Focused On Coffee

No disrespect to all the other cafes with the header, but these are two places where I imagine a big part of the business is selling coffee beans rather than just operating as a cafe.

Hoa Champa

If I have to pick a favorite for coffee, Hoa Champa will be it with their strong and flavorful coffee. They are not just a cafe but also sells coffee beans, brewing accessories and different tea leaves/flowers. The whole place has rustic and old school vibe that is just charming.

The outside area is a nice spot to just relax and people watch, particularly in the evening when motorised vehicles are not allowed in old town. The cafe is located on what I consider the first street of Old Town. So it is always bustling with people.

The in-store coffee prices here are slightly cheaper than what you will find in most of old town cafes.

If you are into different types of coffee beans, this should be an interesting place to visit. They even have weasel coffee.

The Vietnam Luxury beans smelt really nice (this is the beans for the salted coffee), but I got some Robusta for my parents who just likes super strong taste. They also have decaf beans.

When buying the beans, you can ask them to help you grind them into powder. Just let them know how you are going to brew them. They will grind it to the suitable “size”.

This is not the best place to work at compared to other cafes on the list, but you could still sit and do some work for a short period.

  • They take card payment here with a 2% fee.
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 77/76 mbps

XLIII Coffee

If you are on the specialty end of the spectrum, then XLIII Coffee is the place to be. I believe it is the only specialty coffee store in Hoi An when I visited.

The space has a modern minimalist vibe and the staff are very happy to explain and chat with you about specialty coffee since it is still such a niche community in Vietnam.

Of course, you can purchase beans here. For in-store consumption, they serve two formats: Shots (but not espresso) and pour over. The beans they offer might change depending on season and their sources.

They did have decaf beans when I visited, which was a welcomed option after indulging in too many cups of Vietnamese coffees while cafe hopping in Hoi An.

Although the specialty coffee wave is developing, it is still quite small, so the cafe is quiet and chill. It’s quite spacious with huge tables, resembling a coworking space.

There are also power sockets everywhere. So this is a great place to work from if you are looking for somewhere comfortable and quiet.

As you can expect, specialty coffee is a tier more expensive than your typical Vietnamese coffee. But compared to prices globally, it is pretty reasonable.

XLIII Coffee has (at least) three branches across Vietnam, in Da Nang, Saigon and Hoi An.

Popular Cafes In Hoi An Old Town

There are so many charming and beautiful cafes in old town that I did not even managed to visit all those I marked out. Coffee here is typically more expensive than other districts because of both the popularity and high rental.

Phin Coffee Restaurant

Tucked at the end of a small alleyway, this is one cafe that might be hard to just stumble upon. But they have built quite a reputation and I saw a guide bringing her group here. It is very popular among tourists.

What’s nice here is the ambience and environment which is kind of an enclosed garden surrounded by plants. The staff is very attentive and thoughtful.

Some of the favorites here are the coconut iced coffee, peanut butter coffee and egg coffee. But I went for the dark and strong option of Phim drip coffee for a morning perk-me-up.

You get to choose between 2 mid-roast beans or a mix blend. The drip coffee doesn’t come with an iced option but they offered to bring me ice – good service.

I also tried their signature smoked duck noodles. Taste wise, it wasn’t a super standout for me, but it is quite a substantial bowl, and they did not skimp on the meat.

The cafe also offers a 2-hr specialty coffee tasting session which is a good option if you want to know more about coffee in Vietnam and the specialty coffee trend that is building up. They also have a coconut egg coffee making class.

Most of the seats are outdoors and can be warm, but they strategically move fans around depending on where people are sitting so it’s not a big issue. There’s an elevated patio of sort on the “second” storey, but that area is typically hotter in the day.

If you are not fixated on air-conditioning, this is not a bad space to sit and do some work with the natural air. The internet is very fast. I sat here for an hour or so, and did see people on their laptops.

There’s a few power sockets around but they might be needed to power the fans as they shift them around, so I recommend coming with your devices charged.

  • They do take card payment
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 314/127 mbps

Dudu Cafe Hoi An

At the edge of Hoi An’s old town, you will find Dudu Cafe. The storefront has lots of lanterns and, in the interior, shelves of craftworks for sale. It rocks a sorta Asian bohemian vibe – for a lack of better description.

The second floor has an air-conditioned space which is popular during the day time due to the heat. You can also access a small outdoor balcony that overlooks the street. At night, the colorful lanterns light up and people like to sit outdoors to observe the scene.

Similar to many cafes, they serve food from western options like smoothie bowls and toasts to asian dishes like Baos. Prices here are comparable to other cafes in Hoi An. I tried the iced egg coffee and the creamy top layer is just delicious.

There’s lots of power sockets here which is good for working. They have these big tables on the second floor and the internet speed is decent.

Having been spoilt by the enthusiastic staff of many places in Hoi An, the service here admittedly isn’t as proactive but totally fine to get what you need. I only saw 2 staff managing both levels, so it can be quite a task for them.

If you sat on the second floor, I recommend bringing your utensils down when leaving if it’s not too much trouble. Spread some good karma.

  • They do take card payment
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 31/88 mbps

Memories Brunch & Cafe

A three-storey cafe with different spaces and seatings for your selection. They also open very early and close late, so quite a versatile spot.

You will find a cafe on the first floor with a courtyard at the back, an air conditioned room on the second floor, and a rooftop space on the third.

During the day, you can see the antique rooftops of the surrounding building as this is one of the (slightly) taller buildings around. But it can be quite warm depending on the season.

At night, the lanterns on the rooftop light up so it is kind of chill and romantic.

Despite being in the main part of old town, it is situated on a less bustling street in the night, so if you don’t want all the noise, this is not a bad area for a peaceful evening.

Prices here are typical old town prices. I visited late at night after dinner, so was not getting any food. But the pastries looked good.

Their beverage recommendation is the memories egg coffee. Since it is best consumed hot and I wanted a cold drink, I went for the iced coconut coffee instead. The coffee is not super strong so it’s great for the evening.

There’s a mix of seating but you will find some proper tables for working. And there are some power sockets around including the rooftop area.

  • They take card payment here.
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 55/66 mbps

Ubebe Cafe

As the name suggests, this Hoi An cafe specialises in Ube or Purple Yam as most of us know it. If you have had enough of the coconut, egg or salted coffees, this is an opportunity to try something different.

I had the iced Ube coffee and it was just yummy. The blend mixed kinda well, you still feel a strong flavor to it overall. Prices here are higher than other cafes so I wouldn’t recommend getting anything other than their specialities.

They are known to also have pretty good Banh Mi. However at the price point, it was just hard to bring myself to try it. There’s simply too many good Bahn Mi stalls in Hoi An at much cheaper prices (and I haven’t even been able to try them all).

I did get a taste of their cookie tart that came complimentary with the coffee, the filing was tasty and not too sweet.

Regardless, the place is comfy and nice. On second level, you have both air conditioning and a couple of balcony seats to observe the street below. The tables are great for working and there are many power sockets around.

The third floor has a rooftop view which can be a great spot if it’s not raining or too hot.

This is a great spot if you want to try some of the purple yam stuff. There are many interesting dishes on their menu like peanut noodles, bingsu etc that are not as commonly found in other cafes/restaurants.

  • They do take card payment here.
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 216/32 mbps

Hoi An Roastery Espresso

This is a brand that has multiple branches in the old town area. In fact, I know of 2 right in Old town, on the same street; and one just outside of old town.

The thing about Hoi An Roastery is tat they are all beautifully decorated, giving a strong Vietnamese culture vibes. One of them has a balcony (with a long counter table) that gives you a nice view of the street below.

The branch outside old town has 3 stories with huge windows so you can see the bustling main street. That one has a bit of an amazonian vibe, and is fully air-conditioned.

Prices not too different from old town cafes, maybe slightly more expensive. The branch I visited even gave me a cold towel to refresh myself upon sitting down.

Since most of them are beautiful and big, it’s a good standard choice for photos, chilling, or working. There’s usually a variety of seating and power sockets around.

P.S. The outlet at <89 Trần Phú, Phường Minh An> is a pretty good sunset spot.

  • Most branches should accept card payment
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 216/264 mbps (Old Town House II)

Scenic Cafes In An My (Rice Fields)

An My is what I considered the village and agriculture region of Hoi An. Well, because that’s the highlight scenery. Cafes here can offer you beautiful views of the nature and agriculture scene, but this also means it can change across seasons.

The cafes here are my favourite for ambience.

Nghe Rice Paddy Café

If you are looking for a quick escape from the city into the vast rice field, Nigh Rice Paddy Cafe is a great one. It’s just a 10mins GRAB Bike ride from the old town or you can even cycle/bike there yourself. My trip there was all on proper pavement so you don’t need to be riding in mud roads.

This is an open cafe where you can sit and watch the wind blow across the rice fields, creating these beautiful ripples. Mellow, chill music plays in the background like a happy morning place.

While there’s no air conditioning, the place is well shaded, and they will place portable fans near you so you won’t feel hot.

Prices here are comparable to other cafes. I tried the cocoa with ice cream and I like that the cream is salted so kinda like your salted coffee albeit not as thick and its cocoa. The blueberry pancakes weren’t particularly special but it came with a good serving of fruits; you can almost never go wrong with fruits in Vietnam.

The internet there is fast and at the outdoor long “counter” tables, which I think are the best seats for views, there are power sockets hidden underneath, just peak below.

Service here is friendly and attentive. The staff are always smiling when approaching you. And I was pleasantly surprised when they served up a generous plate of complimentary coconut crackers to me, which were delicious.

An exceptionally tranquil spot particularly in the morning since you don’t get the hordes of tourists seeking breakfast in the city cafes. Overall great spot to relax or get some work done with an amazing scenery.

Side note: I have sat at many countryside cafes and typically I will say to put on insect repellent, sometimes without much impact. For some reason, I did not experience any flies or mosquitoes here. Just ants which came for the empty pancake honey jar.

  • They do not take card payment.
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 122/37 mbps

Miss H.A Cafe

Another beauty surrounded by stunning natural scenery is Miss H.A Cafe. There was more people here than Nghe Cafe when I visited, probably because it is bigger and more prominent on one of the main farmlands roads.

It is a house of 3 stories, each nicely decorated. There’s a whole summer and maybe beach vibe here. The furnishings are primarily wooden with a light, airy feel to the whole place.

Not losing out to other cafes in Hoi An old town, this whole place is super instagrammable. Bright, energetic music plays in the background.

Also with that elevated position, you not only see rice fields but swamp lands and fisheries. The top/third floor is a low ceiling area where you take off your shoes and sit on cushions.

Beverage prices here are comparable, but food is slightly more expensive. There’s not a lot of food options here. They primarily serve panini and fruit bowls – your typical cafe breakfast food options. Nothing caught my fancy so I just got the salted coffee which is good.

The wifi here is incredibly fast and there are power sockets around the building on each level. You can also help yourself to drinking water.

There’s a happy hour every day from 5-7pm (subject to change), and this is a good spot for sunset as well.

  • They do not take card payment.

Chill Cafes In An Bang (Beach Views)

Technically, the district is called Cam An, but most of us will probably know it as An Bang because the most famous landmark here is An Bang Beach.

This is the coastal area of Hoi An. And of course, here we’re talking beach views!

Silence of Sound Coffee Hoi An

Now the beach is a popular area to chill. You will find many restaurants and cafes suitable for that. However, if you want to spend some time on your laptop while admiring the beach view then not every place is suitable. (You certainly don’t want your laptop right ON the beach with all the sand)

Near An Bang beach, I like the Silence of Sound cafe. They have a beautiful elevated porch/garden right above the deck chairs. It is actually part of the guesthouse/homestay on the premise. You can use any of the seats and deck chair as long as you are spending at the cafe.

The porch area is pretty spacious and have different seatings with umbrellas. You can move according to where and when the sun hits. So regardless if you wanna get a tan or shade your laptop from direct sunlight, there are options.

The wifi reception is good since they have a few access points. Plus there are even power sockets around some of these areas so you can charge your devices.

And if you really want somewhere fully shaded and cool, there’s indoor seats right at the front of the cafe. Overall, a great place to chill and watch the ocean, or even take a dip. The beach here is also less busy than the main An Bang area.

If you are at the beach/garden area, you can call or WhatsApp them to add on any orders, and they will bring it over. Good service all round.

The place can get busy though, so you want to come early.

Prices here are also not expensive, comparable to cafes in the city. I had the salted coffee which has a nice, thick salted layer and the club sandwich served with fries.

  • They don’t take card payment here
  • Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 87/88 mbps

Rua Beach Coffee & Bar

For great prices, check out Rua Coffee Bar. They are still one of the newer places in the area when I visited.

The primary seating area is all outdoors by the beach front and open air. They do have umbrellas that are opened up during the day So this isn’t exactly the best place for working (although I did while waiting for a friend).

The wifi reception also isn’t great by the sitting area, since the router is in the reception shed at the entrance. So this is really a place to relax and watch the ocean.

Similarly, you can use their deck chairs on the beach if you are spending here.

Staff here are super nice, and prices here are the cheapest I have seen around the beach area. Rua Cafe Is located near one edge of An Bang beach so it’s not too crowded.

If you read my other articles on An Bang beach, you’ll know to avoid the center area. I don’t know why people like to gather there. It’s crowded, chaotic with more touting. Go to the edges. Better yet, go towards Tan Thanh Beach area where the Silence of Sound cafe is at. Waaay more peaceful.

A Growing Hoi An Cafe Scene

Vietnamese coffee is pretty well-known and it is not surprising that the cafe scene in the country is developing rapidly, especially in cities like Hoi An where tourism is huge.

While there are highlight activities around Hoi An, one of the signature things to do here is to simply enjoy a slow and chill day. Spend some time just cafe hopping around town and you are bound to find many interesting spots… and beautiful photos for memories!

8 Great Cafes In Vientiane Laos To Chill Or Work From [+1 Bonus]

On my latest trip to Laos, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of interesting cafes in Vientiane, many just within the touristic zone. This Asian country that is usually off the nomad radar actually has some charming coffee shops with good internet speed.

So if you are looking for a place to chill or work, these are some of the charming cafes I checked out. From themed interiors to quiet corners, got to say I’ve had lotsa fun cafe hopping in the Lao capital.

Beautiful Themed Cafes In Vientiane

While many coffeeshops in Vientiane are nicely designed, you will see that these ones are visually unique once you visit (aka great for photos)

Tree Town Cafe

If you are looking for a super instagrammable cafe in Vientiane, then Tree Town is one of the forerunners. They clearly designed the place for that purpose.

Almost every corner of the cafe is photo worthy and they even place chairs in some areas for the perfect photo op.

A whole tree trunk sticks out in the middle of the cafe, and greenery danging from the roof. At one corner you have walls of roses and a classy Yamaha piano; at another a mirror laced with maple leaves.

Everything is artificial of course (otherwise it will be too hard to maintain), but beautiful nevertheless. There’s also a second storey with more seats + bean bags too.

Food prices here are ok with a quite a big menu. You have the more expensive western style dishes like fancy thick toasts and smoothie bowls, but also classic local meal dishes like stir fry meat with rice etc.

The cappuccino is creamy and they even served it with couple of oreo cookies. I also tried the almond croissant; it wasn’t particularly special but good anyway.

The internet speed is also fast. There are many tables that are great for working. I like the big desk on level 1, especially when the cafe is not crowded.

There’s not a lot of power sockets by the tables, although I saw a couple on the 2nd level, so you want to come with your laptop charged.

Overall a great place to chill or work either way. They do not accept card payment.

Senglao Cafe & Restaurant

A beautiful retro themed cafe that’s nestled in a quiet alley. I think most people come here intentionally since it’s not exactly a foot traffic place. It is about 15mins walk from the famous Pha That Luang, so might be one you want to slot in with your visit to that attraction.

The whole cafe restaurant is movies and Hollywood themed; there are cars and figurines around which makes it a good spot for photos. You even get popcorn serve to you as a table snack.

Staff here are attentive and friendly. Not all of them speak English but they try their best to help. Prices here are slightly more expensive, and there is also a service charge, but sort of what is expected of a restaurant.

I did not have a proper meal here, since I just came from trying out another restaurant nearby. But I have had their pizza at the Viengtara restaurant in Vang Vieng and really enjoyed it. It is said that they are ran by the same owner, thus part of the Senglao menu is available there.

I had my dessert session here with a green tea latte and chocolate pie. The way they serve the Green Tea Latte is interesting and you can tweak the sweetness to taste. The chocolate pie is not particularly special but still nice. Top marks for visual presentation all round.

They are usually not very busy, especially in the daytime, so it’s not a bad place to sit around to do some work. The indoor is cozy and well decorated, the outdoors has a pond right next to it. Both are pretty awesome places to sit.

They do take card payment with a 3% fee.

The Cubano By Phanhsy Cafe

While this Cubano themed cafe might not be as visually bright and striking as the above 2, it is very distinctive in its own right as well.

This is ran by a friendly lady and her daughter. The whole place is decorated with photo frame collage, vinyl records and other classic items. Some corners are great for photos as well.

The cafe has 2 levels with more seating on the top floor. Regardlss you want to check out both storey to admire the decorations around.

They have a decent menu serving both local and cuban food. I tried the urban sandwich which is served with a crispy baguette and rather flavorful, tangy sauce. The ice vanilla latte was sweet and strong, almost like Vietnamese coffee in my opinion.

Prices here are comparable to other cafes in Vientiane.

The lounge area on the 2nd floor Is best for working. Most of the tables here are of good height for laptops. They also have floor cushion and sofa seats for those looking to chill. There are some power sockets around.

This coffeeshop also opens till quite late. In fact, I often see a good crowd here in the evenings. For other late night options in Vientiane, look further down the article, I have classified a section on that.

Great Cafes For Working In Vientiane

Sili Cafe

The cafe doesn’t look striking from the outside and the interior is sorta an old school classic design. But it’s a chill and quiet place, like a hidden gem. They serve both coffee and cooked meals, prices here are very affordable.

I love that the coffee here is super strong, so if that’s your jam, make sure to grab a coffee here. If I had to choose, this is probably my favourite place for coffee in Vientiane.

I also tried the spicy fried boar with rice, which packed quite a punch! So beware if you can’t handle spice; they have plenty of other options, as well as sandwiches and western style food.

The cafe is also great for working on your laptop. At over 100mbps, the internet speed is the fastest I have seen in Laos. There are also power sockets at almost every desk.

The place is not so big, there’s around 4 tables inside that are good height for working. But they also have an outdoor patio area which faces the Wat Ong Teu Temple.

Payment only by cash or Lao QR code.

Naked Espresso Misay

Naked Espresso is kind of a coffee chain and has a significant presence in Vientiane. There are several branches even just within the touristic zone.

When I visited the Misay branch, there was a lot of people on their laptop. This is clearly a favourite spot for remote workers. They even have meeting rooms on the 2nd level.

Another reason for this is probably because the place feature modern set up mixed with some traditional vibes. So you get practical, comfy seatings surrounded by cultural elements.

This one has amazing hand paintings on the wall reflecting Lao culture. Just beautiful.

There are quite a lot of tables, all of which are suitable for working. Some seats will have access to pocket sockets, so you should look around the cafe if you need them.

They serve a variety of beverages from coffee, tea to smoothies and juices. Similarly for food, they have western options is pasta to common regional dishes like Pad Thai and Krapao etc.

Meals here are more expensive since many of these dishes can be found in other cafes at lower prices. Because of that, I didn’t plan to using up one meal here, but I have tried the cakes in Naked Espresso Vang Vieng and it was great! The cakes here are quite regularly priced.

I did end up having the fruit parfait yoghurt smoothie here since I asked the staff what he liked. It was refreshing and good for a snack up before I go for a meal.

Service here is good; the staff seem more professionally trained. They both provide & refill your glass of water.

The cafe also take card payment without extra fees.

Sailomyen Cafe & Hostel

This is a cafe and hostel that is located just on the edge of the touristic zone. It is very modern and beautifully decorated, with chill music playing in the background.

This was one of the accommodations I was considering, but their private rooms were fully booked on the dates I wanted.

Many of the tables are suitable for working, and a few of them have access to power sockets. They also provide a flask of drinking water on each table.

Having visited in the morning, I realised some of the hostel guests will show up here for breakfast. So maybe avoid visiting during breakfast times or come earlier to grab a seat.

That said, they do serve an all day breakfast menu along with plenty of local dishes. The menu is quite big, and prices here are comparable to other cafes.

I tried the Eggs Benedict, it turned out to be sort of a fusion dish, served with Asian style stir fried mushroom/veg, and what I believe is a tangy fruit sauce, both of which I didn’t mind. Those tasted pretty good. The eggs though needed more work.

Nevertheless, it’s still a nice breakfast dish overall,  I just wouldn’t compare it to the standard Egg’s Benedict. The coffee was good as I indulge in my last few Americano Coconut before leaving the country.

The cafe operates till around 5pm and then place turns into a bar instead.

They do take card payment with a 3% fee.

Late Night Cafes In Vientiane [Open Past 8pm]

Balance Bar & Cafe

Past by this cafe bar a few times and finally visited during a rainy afternoon. They are actually two spaces right across each other, with an open terrace in the middle.

The bar only opens later in the evening, but the cafe operates from day time and goes into the night. So this is one of the cafe in Vientiane that remain open after dark if you’re looking for a late caffeine hit.

I imagine you can order coffee and alcohol from both areas. During good weather days, the open terrace is a seating area with live music in the evenings.

I have only sat in the cafe area but both spots are comfy and modern. The internet speed is one of the fastest I have seen, and there are many power sockets around. The seats are all very comfy with spacious tables. Really great spot for working.

The prices here are comparable depending on what you order. Some food are expensive, but some are really cheap. Like I got a very fancy and tasty brownie for only around US$1.50. And the Matcha Latte was pretty decent.

Note that they do have a 7% service charge in addition to menu prices. They also accept credit card without extra fees.

Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 178/87 mbps

Drip 1920s

Another late night cafe in Vientiane that you can visit. It’s part of the Barn1920s hostel, which kind of explains its late hours.

The theme of the cafe is as its name suggest, back to the early 1900s. Although it only takes up a small space, the decor fits the theme very well with furnishings like old school fans, lamps, telephones that take you back in time. So it’s a warm tone, cozy vibe especially at night.

The cafe is quite known for their drip coffee. They do have single origin coffee from different countries. Can’t say I’m someone who can deeply appreciates original flavors of beans so I just had their in house pour over.

Since they open till late, they also operate as a bar serving alcohol and cocktails.

It’s a pretty good place to get some work done. While the wifi speed might not be as fast as some of the cafes mentioned here, it is still decent. And there are power sockets around the cafe area.

On the second floor, there’s a room with cushions, low tables, and lots of power sockets. They also provide some board games there if you are chilling with a group.

They do take credit card payment with 2.8% fee for Visa/Mastercard.

Internet Speed (Download/Upload): 21/17 mbps

Tipsy Elephant

Ok you might guess from the name that this is not exactly a cafe. It’s a bar and a rooftop bar with probably the best city views, thus I have to mention it.

Tipsy Elephant is located on the 10th floor of the SureStay Hotel. You get a view of the city or the Mekong River, depending on where you sit. But it’s a great spot for catching the sunset.

The bar only opens from 5pm onwards, and they serve both food and drinks. I only tried several variations of Beer Lao here, since I wasn’t particularly interested in other items. Too many places I still want to try.

Prices are higher here due to the location, and since it’s a hotel bar. But worth coming for the views during the golden hour.

The place was not very busy when I went, so you can actually sit and do some work. It’s more of a relaxing place with modern music, rather than a party bar. Some tables have power sockets, but the internet connection varies quite a bit depending on where you are seating.

They do accept credit card payment with a minimum spending of over 300K kip (will change with inflation)

Cafe Scene In Vientiane

That’s a wrap on some of my favorite cafes in Vientiane, and there’s more marked out on my maps that I didn’t even manage to visit! They’re like little pockets of charm in this laid-back city, perfect for an escape from the Southeast Asia sun.

The cafe scene in Vientiane is definitely starting up and the coffee shops can be quite distinctive depending on the owner and his/her origins. Whether you are looking for a caffeine fix, a cozy spot to work, or a cool backdrop for your Insta feed, some of these places fit the bill.

Be sure to check out some of the best things to do in Vientiane or tasty food places you can try in the Lao capital.

23 Eateries And Restaurants In Chiang Mai To Try: Foodie Guide

When it comes to food, you will find a fair share of delicious dishes served up by the diverse restaurants in Chiang Mai. From the roadside stalls to air conditioned eateries, you will find plenty of options regardless of your budget.

Eating in Chiang Mai is not just enjoyable but also really affordable. While I typically cook my own meals, I don’t think I made more than 3 meals in my whole month in Chiang Mai.

Here are some of my favorite restaurants in Chiang Mai to try!

Budget Thai Restaurants In Chiang Mai

Moo Ping Khun Por

thai-moo-ping

This small local eatery can be easy to miss, but it would be your loss to overlook it. I really love their Pork Skewers (Moo Ping). They are juicy and so well flavoured that you don’t need any dips to go with it.

In addition, they offer a variety of grilled meat dishes that is cooked over charcoal. You can enjoy them with sticky rice to add some carbs to your meal. It is nothing super fancy, but so delicious and great for a quick meal.

Note that they open early in the morning and close by around 1pm. So it’s not a dinner place; but those skewers will go really well with some beer.

They do not take card payment; and their prompt pay QR code is a personal account. So cash payment will be best there.

Northland Restaurant

northland-restaurant-chiang-mai

Undoubtedly the most value for money place if you’re on a budget. This quaint restaurant that looks plain and normal is actually a hidden gem.

It’s ran single-handedly by an old lady; I guess that’s the definition of home-cooked food. Prices here are cheap with bigger than normal portion. And you will find many common Thai dishes here.

Know that she is the only one serving, cooking, and taking orders, so be patient especially if there are many customers. Or come during non-peak hours and I think you’ll be doing both yourself and her a favor 🙂

In any case, she doesn’t just leave you waiting. After taking my order, she came out with a bunch of complimentary stuff – a bottle of iced water, followed by passion fruits and her home-made coconut jelly (I loved these). Then she went back to cooking.

Now, it’s not like the food here tasted incredibly superior to other restaurants, but it’s satisfying much like a home-cooked meal. And it’s great value for money with a nice local owner.

The Pad Thai I ordered left me incredibly full, and just based on my taste buds, I don’t think she used any MSG on it. There’s also condiments on the table if you want to adjust the saltiness, spiciness etc.

I can foresee being a regular customer if I stayed around the area. And many of you might, because it is in the Old Town.

Uncle Pan Thai Food

This is a popular local eatery in Nimman ran by a friendly couple. It can get busy during meal hours.

The menu is not very big but it clearly doesn’t need to be. Most popular option here during lunch are the rice dishes where you get fried egg (with oozing yolk), and your choice of meat.

While they don’t speak good English, you can take the menu and point at whatever you want.

I tried the crispy pork rice and it was delish. I like that they serve green veggies with it making this a well balanced meal. The flavor was just nice and the pork was the right texture (crispy skin, juicy meat).

They also have self service broth soup and drinking water that you can help yourself to.

I was pleasantly surprised that I could pay with Prompt Pay here.

Nong Bee’s Burmese Restaurant

burmese-food-chiang-mai

Just a few stalls away from Uncle Pan, you will find Nong Bee’s Burmese Restaurant. The girls running it are very friendly as well.

Yes, I know this is not Thai food, but I decided to put it up here for more convenient reference since they are also of similar price point.

The restaurant do serve Thai food, but I’ve never tried them because well, I’m here for the Burmese dishes. And judging from the taste, I don’t think their Thai food will be any lesser in standard.

I love the curry chicken, it is simple yet thick and full of flavor. And the iconic Burmese tea leaves salad is just a great complimentary side. Best of all, they are really cheap too.

Mid Range Thai Restaurants In Chang Mai

Although I’m grouping them as midrange, most of them have dishes under THB100 (~US$3) which makes a proper meal. They can easily fall into the same budget range as above depending on what you order.

Jeab Cafe & Thai Food

khao-soi-gai

This corner cafe/restaurant might not catch your immediate attention but it’s a great and value for money spot for various Thai dishes. It is both a cafe and restaurant, which means they also serves coffee, toasts and ice cream.

For the quality of the food and environment, prices here are cheaper than I would expect. It is air-conditioned, clean and comfortable but almost street level prices. Coffee prices are cheaper than your modern cafes.

The Khao Soi was extremely flavorful; as much as I was tempted to try the condiments, I really couldn’t find a reason to. They even asked for my desired spice level so it will suit both locals and tourists who maybe cannot handle as much heat.

peaflower-butter-toast

The peaflower butter toast is quite pretty good; thick with a crispy texture. Staff here are friendly and attentive which always make for a good experience.

For digital nomads: Although this is not a cafe where you regularly find people on their laptops, it can definitely serve the purpose. Comfy chairs with high speed wifi, and a more-than-affordable cafe menu. I did some work here while waiting out the rain.

For other cafes

So Good Thai

gaeng-hung-lay

Similarly, this restaurant doesn’t appear visually striking, but it’s comfortable with both indoor aircon and outdoor seats.

The staff is friendly and professional. They have an extensive menu of both Northern Thai and common Thai dishes. The roasted delights like crispy pork belly and roasted chicken are some of their specialty.

I tried the Gaeng Hung Lay and loved the amount of flavor in it. Perfect to go with a bowl of rice for a really satisfying meal. It’s a casual no frills place for some delicious Thai food.

As per most Thai restaurants, it is best if you come with more people to share and try the various dishes. But there’s always options for a solo diner.

Cherng Doi Roast Chicken

famous-roast-chicken-chiang-mai

Recommended by the Michelin guide, this place is most known for their roast chicken.

Juicy, succulent meat with crispy skin. They get crowded during meal times, particularly at night. But this might just be one place you want to come during high turnover times.

This is because there is a higher turnover of food, and the chicken will likely be freshly roasted. That is important for a dish like this.

The portion is not very big, definitely good for one. The price to portion ratio can be considered slightly on the expensive side for this type of restaurant.

Nevertheless, the chicken quality is good and worth trying. The tamarind sauce is a nice touch, but you don’t really even need it.

They also serve other traditional Thai dishes which seem to be good. I have not tried them but the crispy papaya salad and pork with basil is popular as well.

CHUM

northern-thai-food-chiang-mai

If you are searching specifically for a taste of Northern Thai cuisine, not just general Thai food, CHUM is the place to be.

Despite being a rather fancy boutique-looking restaurant, the prices here are surprisingly affordable. The place is very cozy and there are limited seats. So I recommend making a reservation if you are visiting during the weekend or even during peak dining hours.

They have a rather extensive and colourful menu. You get lots of visuals so you will have an idea what the dishes look like.

There’s plenty of interesting dishes and some exotic stuff like grilled bee larve (I mainly remembered this coz I tried it).

I also like the jackfruit with pork which is incredibly flavourful. You will likely need rice or Roti to go with most of the food here.

Ideally, it is a place to come in pairs or groups so you can try several dishes. But no one is stopping me (or you) from visiting alone.

Note that there is a 7% GST but the price to quality ratio here is still immense.

Galea Restaurant

beautiful-garden-cafe

This is one place to visit if it purely just for the ambience and surrounding. Galea is sort of a garden restaurant peppered with colourful flowers all around the compound. It is big and spacious, with the lower terrace right next to a lake.

Similar to many Asian cuisine, the restaurant is best enjoyed in group by ordering multiple dishes and sharing them with rice. Although there are also dishes like Pad Thai, Red/Green curries that are still perfect if you are just dining alone.

I tried the pineapple fried rice and enjoyed it. They have both common Thai dishes, as well as those specific to Northern Thai cuisine.

pineapple-fried-rice

In any case, there is both a cafe and restaurant here; so you don’t necessarily need to visit for a proper meal. I like it best in the morning when it just opened without much crowd. You can really see enjoy the tranquility; and they play mellow piano music which  complements the ambience.

Despite the surrounding, prices here are not expensive (likely because the location is comparatively remote). In fact, the drinks are cheaper than many cafes in the city center. I also tried the Banoffee Pie which is pretty tasty.

While it is not impossible to walk in, getting a cab (or Grab) in is the simplest way; and it’s rather quick (about 10mins) from Nimman area.

Aroy Dee

This is a popular restaurant among tourists at the edge of old town, and it can get pretty busy at night. They serve general Thai cuisine, and the good thing here is that there are many dishes that are suitable for just a single diner.

The wok stuff seems to be most popular and you can see the chef at work right in front of the store. I tried the Tom Yam fried rice; it was flavorful and satisfying. They did put herbs like lemongrass, chilli etc, rather than just a paste.

While I did not get their coconut shake since I arrived from having several cups of coffee, I see it was quite a big jar and I’ve heard its good.

The interior looks more colorful than your regular roadside restaurant but there is no aircon. If you want a more peaceful setting, come in the day. If you want to feel the bustling ambience, which can sometimes get chaotic with orders, go in the evening.

Pricier Thai Restaurant

Due to the amount of cheap and tasty Thai food options around, I do struggle going for higher end restaurants when traveling/dining alone. Anything above a certain price range really need to be an “experience” (over just food), and this is probably where I would make the cut.

Note that the following is not even considered a high end place, as I know of experimental restaurants that can go to 1000THB.

Ginger Farm Kitchen

butterfly-pea-tea

Having been in the michelin guide since 2019, this restaurant clearly has done something right. They are known for sourcing local, organic ingredients and not using MSG in their cooking.

Prices here are on the expensive end for local standards. I was a tad hesitant to try it just because there are many Thai food options that are incredibly tasty and cheap.

And as an Asian, I have a (not always logical) bias towards street food. Regardless how delicious the food might taste, it’s probably difficult to justify that price gap if it’s a pure taste consideration.

Nevertheless, I had to at least give it a shot. I decided not to go with a super traditional Thai dish but rather something they are known for yet not commonly found outside – the Crab and Bacon pasta.

crab-pasta

This dish was thick and very umami. They also serve some carb roe on the side so you know you are getting a fair share of crab. The bacon is a tad crispier than I like but overall a pretty satisfying dish.

And I probably would need to pay more for something like that in many other countries. So this is still a pretty good deal despite being more expensive in local context.

The butterfly pea tea is light, but goes well with the honey.

If you’re big on organic food, Ginger Farm House definitely cater to that. They also serve vegetarian and vegan options.

One thing to note, places like these typically have a lighter taste platte because they don’t use MSG and has a bit more of healthy considerations. So don’t expect as strong flavors as what you get on the streets.

It is ideal if you’re with a group, so you can order/try multiple dishes. The restaurant interior is beautiful so that adds to the overall dining experience.

Buffet Restaurants In Chiang Mai

There are several all-you-can-eat buffet places in Chiang Mai that are just absolute value for money, so I had to try some of them. For me, they are good when I want to load up on protein and fiber (aka meat and veg).

The most worthwhile and popular ones are basically 1) Thai Mookata and 2) Hotpot Shabu Shabu.

Hmu Song Chan

best-mookata-in-chiang-mai

This is my favorite Mookata restaurant in Chiang Mai for almost one single reason – that it has air conditioning and thus opens from noon onwards.

Most Mookata places will only open in the evenings because they are open air. You can imagine it is too hot to be having grill in the afternoon with the Thai climate.

I try to avoid having buffet style meals for dinner because there is not enough time to digest and I go to sleep feeling bloated.

In addition, as they are in an enclosed space with aircon, the whole place feels more hygienic without flies hovering over the food.

Hmu Song Chan’s operating hours works best for me. I go right after an intensive gym session.

The place is not only vey cheap, but there are also many tables. That said, I’ve heard you usually need to queue when visiting during dinner time. Many locals dine here due to the affordable pricing. There is also no time limit.

The food selection is almost the same as many buffet places, but I do find the ice cream here to be of better quality.

The staff don’t speak much English but I don’t think much communication is really needed.

Payment Options: Prompt Pay (Personal), Cash, Credit Card

The nine Shabu

nine-shabu-chiang-mai

Rather hidden on a 2-level building in Nimman, nine Shabu is the most value for money Shabu Shabu place I found, especially if you are dining alone.

It is the cheapest I have seen at 199THB (~US$5), the base price also include drinks and dessert. I do believe you get to choose two base soups even if you are dining alone, because they served me a split pot.

Most shabu shabu places will only allow you one soup base (serve in a regular non-split pot) when dining alone.

However, the staff here are not particularly proficient when it comes to English or service (slightly lesser than the regular Thai standard). Thus I only chose one soup base assuming that’s the norm.

The place is small so there are not many tables, but it is usually not crowded in the afternoon.

International Cuisine In Chiang Mai

While Thai food is delicious, I don’t expect you want to eat it for every single meal especially if you are staying for quite a while.

Chiang Mai also has many restaurants serving tasty international cuisine that are of good standards. Here are some of my favorites.

Beast Burger

beast-burger-chiang-mai

If you want a break from Thai food and craving a nice, juicy burger – Beast Burger will satisfy your craving. (And no, this is not Mr Beast’s Beast Burger, it just has the same name.)

Nevertheless, the burgers here are great. The bun is crispy and the patty is not too dry. The menu has a right amount of options and not overly extensive. If you want to be a bit more healthy, they even offer sweet potato fries.

Without surprise, prices here are more expensive than your typical street Thai food, but a really good deal for a nice burger.

They also have a 2nd level open patio which is great for the night when it’s not that hot. But the indoor space on the ground floor is pretty bright with huge open windows that overlooks the street.

Payment Options: Prompt Pay (Business), Cash, Credit Card

Na-Nua Suan Dok Gate

steak-and-rice

For some nice steak, this is my go-to place in Old Town. I’m not really talking like western restaurants serving a huge slab of steak, but rather steak meat with rice.

The place is small, but it is popular! Particularly among expats. Most of their meat come from New Zealand or Australia so the quality is there. You can also choose different cuts of meat from Ribeye to Sirloin etc.

Prices here are more expensive than your typical local Thai meals, but can be considered quite a deal considering the food/ingredient involved.

Today Curry Bar

today-curry-bar

This is a nice, chill bar in Nimman for dinner or supper. They have a semi-open rooftop area which is cooling at night; so it is great for drinks while looking at the street below.

The curry rice is what I came here for, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s not authentic to any specific cuisine but just tasty. They also serve fried chicken, ramen and bar food – so a bit of Korean/Japanese mix if I have to put a finger to it.

On certain nights, they even have live music.

Payment Options: Credit Card, Prompt Pay, Cash

Salad Concept

If you are tired of street food, and want something really healthy, this is a popular place to go – even for locals.

Despite the name, they don’t only serve salad. And frankly, they also don’t just serve healthy options. You can still find burgers and fries here. But they have a huge menu, and much of it are healthy choices.

From salads to wraps and breakfast plates, there are a ton of dishes here to choose from. You can even customise your own salad or wrap!

That said, they also span a wide range in terms of pricing. E.g. if you have a salmon dish, you can expect a higher cost. Overall, it’s great if you are looking for healthy options because there is so much to choose from.

There’s a couple of outlet, one in Nimman and another near old town. I’ve never visited the old town one, but the Nimman branch is also a good spot for working as mentioned in our guide to cafes in Chiang Mai.

Payment Options (Nimman Branch): Prompt Pay, Cash, Credit Card

RAWR

korean-fried-chicken-chiang-mai

For some nice Korean fried chicken, RAWR is one of my favourite choices. They have an outlet, and a food truck stand in Nimman which is the one I go to. It’s a nice indulgence while getting in my protein intake after working out.

There’s really just three simple things to Korean Fried Chicken for me. Crispy exterior, juicy interior and finger licking good sauce. RAWR meets them all, so it has become an easy choice.

I have also tried their Jajangmyeon, which is different from the traditional Korean one, but still tasty nevertheless.

Sweets And Desserts

Guu Fusion Roti & Tea

Located right at the busy stretch of Nimman Road, this is quite a popular place during the day and night. They have quite an extensive menu but I visit specifically for their Crispy Roti with Thai Sweet and Whipped Cream.

The portion is not only huge, but it is not too sweet, and the cream tastes pretty light. In fact, I was surprised to be able to finish a whole plate by myself. Nevertheless, it is good for sharing, particularly if you are ordering other dishes as well.

Payment Options: Prompt Pay (Business), Cash, Credit Card

Mont Nomsod

traditional-toasts-thailand

If you have been to Thailand, you might have heard of Mont Nomsod. It is one of the oldest toast brands in the country since 1964. And you can find a branch in Chiang Mai.

So if you have not tried Mont Nomsod before, definitely give it a shot. It is a local favourite after all.

One interesting thing here though is people see it almost like a dessert/after-meal snack rather than a breakfast food. In fact, the Nimman branch doesn’t open until 2pm in the afternoon. And they open till past midnight.

It gets crowded in the evening. So if you prefer not to wait, go in the afternoon like I did.

I personally prefer more crispiness to the toast texture, but it is still relatively nice overall. And they give a generous slap of topping on it. I tried the Taro and Pandan Custard.

Many locals and tourists enjoy it, so try it and see if it appeals to you.

Payment Options: Prompt Pay (Business), Cash, Credit Card

Volcano Cafe

On the topic of toast for desserts – if that is your jam, check out Japanese themed Volcano Cafe which serves up these incredibly delicious  pocket cheese toast. There are tons of flavours available from Pandan to ice cream and all kinds of fruits.

The signature here is the stretchy cheese that just pulls and pulls. So I will say, just choose the “with cheese” option even though you might not think it fits with flavours like melon. I had the Pandan custard with cheese and loved it.

The toast tastes best when served hot. So while I think they are available on food delivery apps, it might not be the same when you get it fresh.

There is a branch at ONE Nimman, but I visited the outlet opposite Chiang Mai University(CMU)

At this outlet, there’s also restaurant under the same brand for proper meals. This is like a small Korean and Japan corner. There’s a small district here that is rather bustling, particularly among students.

The second level is rather quiet and decent for working/studying. There’s even power sockets at some tables. However, the internet is only for 1 hour and has rather slow speed for Chiang Mai standards.

Tip: Some services in the CMY area tend to be cheaper than touristic/expat zones like Nimman. For example, a haircut here costs around 150-200, while barber shops in Nimman usually charge 300THB and up. That’s like almost 50% difference.

Charin Pie

charin-pie-cafe

A popular spot that specialises in delicious homemade pies. I tried their signature coconut pie which consists of a fluffy merengue topping, custard and coconut pieces. But there are many options that sounds really tempting.

Prices here are decent, and coffee might even be on the heater end depending on what you are ordering.

I like that you can choose the roast for the coffee since I tend to like darker roast with stronger flavor. You can even get a latte art of your face on it for free!

They have a nice garden that is well sheltered by trees. The indoor sitting isn’t actually anything fancy, but there’s aircon if it gets too warm outdoors.

Payment Options: Prompt Pay (Business), Cash, Credit Card

7 Senses Gelato

chiang-mai-gelato-7senses

I know Asia isn’t really the place for Gelato, but if you’re really craving some, this is the best place to get it. The founder is Italian himself which explains the commitment to quality.

Prices are not cheap here, especially for Thailand. That’s because they import most of the ingredients from overseas apart from the fruits and diary which is local.

They have many flavors here which you can try before taking your pick. Some of them can be seasonal so if you see something exotic that you want to try, probably grab it while you can.

BONUS: Fruits

nimman-fruit-stand

Much of South East Asia is blessed with a variety of sweet, juicy fruits around due to the tropical climate. Thailand is no different. In fact, you can find plenty of vendors selling fruits around.

If you are staying in Nimman, my favourite place to get my dose of natural healthy vitamins though is this smal Fruit Stand at 53 Siri Mangkalajarn Rd. The owners are friendly and they are one of the cheapest around.

As per last visit, each bag of cut fruit only costs THB15, which is at least 20-30% cheaper than many other places. You get a good variety of options from watermelon to pineapples, honeydews and more.

They also have the more expensive options like mangos and jackfruits, which are still pretty affordable.

Eating In Chiang Mai

As you can see, you can eat really well regardless of your budget. There’s plenty of restaurants in Chiang Mai serving tasty food at very affordable prices.

Here is another budget tip, food delivery apps usually have discounts particularly for new customers. I use them often in Thailand which also allows me to try restaurants that might be further away. Grab and Food Panda are two of the most common ones at the time of writing.

19 Best Cafes In Chiang Mai For Working (Incl. Hidden Gems)

Having prowled through many incredible cafes in Chiang Mai, I can see how they contribute to this Northern Thai city’s rise as a digital nomad hub.

While hunting for the perfect spot to sip a latte and power through my to-do list, I’ve discovered some real gems. In this article, I’ll share my favorite coffee shops in Chiang Mai to work and relax.

To be honest, I’ve barely touched the tip of the iceberg as most of these cafes are just in the main expat/tourist zones.

I’ve marked out the payment options for most of them since many nomads prefer to pay with digital avenues as ATM withdrawal for foreign cards is not favorable in Thailand. If you want to understand more, as well as the diff between PromptPay Business/Personal accounts, I’ll explain more in the upcoming Chiang Mai Nomad Travel Guide.

Note that cafe operations can change over time, so you can always ask to confirm.

Best Cafes In Chiang Mai For Work Facilities

These are my top picks 2 in each of the popular districts, specifically for work related factors. The two main considerations here are just the availability of good tables/seats for working, and access to power sockets.

WiFi speed is not a big factor here because many cafes in Chiang Mai has blazing speed that is more than what most of us will need.

So if you are most concerned about having big tables with access to power sockets, these are cafes to consider. That said, all of them tend to have pretty quiet ambience and good coffee for working.

For Nimman district…

Pai Yan Yai Coffee

pai-yan-yai-coffee-store

A classic cafe vibe, this place can be overlooked as it sits on a rather quiet street. In fact, it took me weeks from when I first noticed the cafe, to actually visiting it.

But it’s a prime spot if you are looking to work or study, and that seems to be a big portion of the cliente whenever I visit.

The cafe has 2 floors, both of which are filled with standard wooden tables and chairs that are good for working. They also have some couches for the more chill customers.

The first level is brighter with music, the second level is quieter and has a more cozy vibe, so take your pick. Regardless, there’s plenty of power sockets all around the cafe, as well as complimentary water.

Another advantage here is that they have an extensive menu serving not just cafe food (e.g. toasts, breakfast plates etc) but also lunch/dinner dishes like fried rice, spaghetti etc.

favorite-chiang-mai-coffee

There’s some very interesting drink options on the menu. I love their Gaa-Fae-Kuat (Coffee with concentrated espresso ice cubes). So strong, so delish!

Prices here are really competitive, especially for the food. Some of them are street food prices. Plus the staff here is really friendly.

In addition, the cafe closes only 8pm which is later than many cafes. For more cafes with later closing hours, look further down this list.

Barisotel

white-bright-cafe-chiang-mai

This cafe feels airy and spacious because of its interior decor. It is clean, white, and bright. The marble tables giving it a nice vibe. While it can be plain looking, but when the sunlight shines in, it’s beautiful.

It is not usually crowded which makes it a nice place for some calming peace. You will usually find people working on their laptops here because the seats are good, tables are spacious and there are plenty of power sockets around.

There’s a 2nd floor space that overlooks the ground floor. Many people like to work from here since it’s pretty chill.

Prices here are slightly more expensive than other cafes but comparable. They also offer a brunch menu for food, along with a good selection of cakes and pastries.

  • Payment Options: Credit Card, Prompt Pay, Cash
  • Wifi Speed (Download/Upload): 294/128 mbps

If you are in the old town area…

W8 Cafe

W8-cafe-chiang-mai

This is a bit of a hidden gem as it doesn’t have a ground floor storefront, so you likely won’t see it unless you are looking for it specifically.

W8 is located on level 2 of an old building, and the entrance is only a small, unassumingly door to the stairs up.

However, the place is super chill and nice, with a patio full of greenery. The patio is not great for working, but the main area has proper, spacious wooden tables. It feels a bit like a loft style coworking space and the orangey lights gives it a cool, calming vibe.

When I visited, everyone inside was working on their laptops. Probably because of that, it was also pretty quiet with soft music in the background.

There are not just power sockets around, they even provide extension plugs so you can drag it to your desk. Just return them back to the basket after you are done,

They have a decent beverage menu including some house signatures. There is not much food options here, so don’t come on an empty stomach. Prices here are normal, maybe even slightly cheaper.

  • Payment Options: Prompt Pay (Business), Cash, Credit Card
  • Wifi Speed (Download/Upload): 384/417 mbps

The Story 106

chiang-mai-cafes-for-work

Story 106 is actually a coworking space + cafe, so that kind of explains why it is good for working.

The ambience here is nice and it is not really within the heart of the busy district. They have two levels, both of which have spacious seatings. The lower level has more of a cafe vibe while the 2nd level is more catered towards working.

You can find power sockets by the walls around the room so just look around if you need one. They also provide drinking water that you can help yourself to.

NOTE: The cafe wifi operates by login code, so you do need to buy something to stay connected. I believe each code is good for an hour, and I got 2 codes when I ordered a drink, which is pretty fair.

story-106-cafe-coworking

The cafe offers a wide range of beverages from coffee/tea to soda and non-caffeinated stuff. There are lesser-seen options like the Hojicha Latte I got, and even matcha affogato.

The cafe also serves pastries and proper dishes that are good for meals; so if you want to spend a day here working, you can. Prices here are similar to usual cafe rates.

  • Payment Options: Credit Card (No Min. but 3% Fee), Prompt Pay (Business), Cash
  • Wifi Speed (Download/Upload): 304/404 mbps

Coworking spaces ain’t my first choice option especially with all these nice cafes around. However, there are several coworking spaces in Chiang Mai, some of which operates in similar model of food/drink purchases.

Cafes With Added Focus On Coffee

Now, I am no coffee expert and people have different preferences. If I really had to pick, my favorite coffee in Chiang Mai would probably be the Gaa-Fae-Kuat from PaiYanYai.

But these are places which put more focus on coffee than your regular cafes. So if having specialty coffee (I use this term loosely here) is your biggest consideration point while working, these are nice spots to check out.

Akha Ama Phrasingh (Old Town)

cafe-old-town-entrance

Akha Ama Phrasingh is known for serving up some of the best coffees in Chiang Mai. You can even choose your beans for the drip coffee.

As such, they get pretty crowded as well. This is a nice spot if you like a bustling ambience with people chatting and all. Many tourists tend to visit as it is near to one of the iconic temples in Chiang Mai.

akha-ama-phrasingh-cafe

The level 2 space, especially the semi-circular counter table, overlooks the first floor. Only a few of the seats have access to power sockets so you want to be early if you need them.

Regardless, this is a great place to grab a nice coffee while touring the old town. Similar to most places that specialises in coffee, they don’t have a whole bunch of food options but some baked goodies are available.

Graph

graph-specialty-coffee-chiang-mai

Graph is where you find plenty (and I mean plenty) of very very interesting coffee concoctions. Cold Brew with fruits, Espresso with Activated Charcoal, Coffee with Dried Chilli, you name it.

And no, they are not just random fancy mixtures. I really enjoyed the No.29 (Nitro Cold Brew / Pineapple / Lime). You can ask them for recommendations based on your tastes since the options can get overwhelming.

Coffee is clearly a focus for them. The branches are all dark themed, giving a chill and relaxed vibe, especially if you were just baking under the blazing Thai sun.

Coffee prices here are bit more expensive because of the special brews. Although the typical options like espresso and latte is also higher than market rate. So I recommend trying the special ones.

They do serve a few cakes and pastries; prices for these are comparable to other cafes. The carrot cake was tasty and soft!

Last I know, there’s 5 branches in Chiang Mai, 2 of which are Nimman district. One of them is in ONE Nimman mall, and the other (Graph Ground) is just 5 mins walk away at Siri Mangkalajarn Road. Note that Graph ONE Nimman does not have wifi, so head to Graph Ground if you plan to work on your laptop.

  • Payment Options (ONE Nimman Branch): Credit Card (Min. 300THB), Prompt Pay (Business), Cash

Roast8ry Lab

roast8ry-lab-coffee-chiang-mai

Here’s an award winning cafe brand having won both Thailand and World Latte Art competitions numerous times.

They have 3 branches right within Nimman, all pretty close to each other. The outlets typically rock a classy, dark vibe like their branding. But if you like a brighter environment, the Roast8ry Lab behind ONE Nimman is bright with big windows that looks out to the street.

For working though, I think the branch down Nimman Rd Lane 17 (aka Roast8ry Coffee Flagship Store) has the best seatings – Big, long wooden tables. But you will regularly find people on laptops at all 3 branches.

There’s a range of coffee options from their signatures to higher end beans. Prices here span a wide range but there are comparable prices to other cafes. You can also buy beans here directly. They do not sell food.

Chiang Mai Cafes With Special Ambience

Most modern cafes in Chiang Mai features some sort of minimalist decor. I do like that style personally but frankly, it can get dull when all cafes are doing that same vibe.

So if you are looking for something different, here are some cafes with more distinctive style and ambience.

Ji Matcha

ji-matcha-teahouse-entrance

I’m surprised at how uncrowded this cafe/teahouse is. But good for me, because this is my favorite place for some peaceful time.

It runs on a Japanese theme, and I got to say, they do it really well. The space is really beautiful; they manage to replicate a traditional Japanese “sitting on floor” vibe without the discomfort of it (i.e. they elevate the floor so you actually have proper leg space like sitting on a chair)

japanese-theme-cafe-interior

The place is incredibly photogenic and calming, especially since it is usually not crowded.

I’m not a tea expert but I enjoyed the Hojicha and their cakes are fluffy like what you expect in Japan.

chiang-mai-cafe-food

The wifi speed is not blazing fast like many of the modern cafe, but still high quality. Unless you are doing anything that requires super high bandwidth, you probably won’t feel the difference.

Most seats won’t have access to power sockets so come charged if you are planning to work here. Nevertheless, the space is suitable for working on laptops.

(Oh yes! They also have a couple of cute cats in the house, so its a bonus if they come say hi to you)

  • Payment Options: Prompt Pay (Personal), Cash (5% discount!), Credit Card
  • Wifi Speed (Download/Upload): 26/12mbps

Fern Forest Cafe

fern-forest-cafe-smoothie-bowl

A very popular cafe in Old Town because of its green outdoor space and also extensive menu. They even have a pond with huge Koi fishes.

The outdoor garden is covered by big trees, making it look like nicely shaded forest. Although the entrance is right next to a road with decent traffic, you feel like going into a whole different environment upon entering the compound. If it’s not for the sound of the motor cars, you might just be fully immersed in nature.

I came early during opening hours as I’ve heard it gets increasingly crowded as the day goes on (which was the case). The outdoor seats though are not the best for working but ok for a couple of hours. You want to head indoors if you want to be more comfortable on your laptop.

They have a huge menu which has dishes that are good for meals or snacks throughout the day. The beverage selection is similarly quite extensive and has interesting options that put a spin on different tea and coffee.

Coffeeshops That Open Till Late (Past 7pm)

I found myself writing about this as a standout point, since most cafes in Chiang Mai will close by 5-6pm, some even as early as 3-4pm. So I decided to just put it as category for all you night owls who still want a caffeine kick at night.

As mentioned above, PanYanYai Coffee operates till 8pm, here are others operating past sunset.

LOT Cafe

chiang-mai-cafe-weekend-crowd

Very popular cafe on the main Nimmanahaeminda Road. It gets a good crowd even in the morning once it opens. Needless to say, it gets increasingly busy later in the day. So you might want to go early.

You will see many people working or studying here, apart from the regular coffee crowd. Most of the tables are circular, which does get a bit cramped with 2 laptops. But there’s also a big desk in the center, which has bit of a coworking vibe.

A few of the seats do have access to power sockets but with how popular the cafe is, don’t count on always getting those seats.

There are outdoors seating, but the big glass panels means you can even watch the street hustle while sitting inside by the windows. They also do have a second level which was closed during my period of visit.

The decoration is modern minimalist. Complimented by some chill music, it has a clean and relaxed vibe.

The cafe opens until 10pm which is good if you are looking for night shot of caffeine.

LOT-cafe-toast-coffee

The popular signature drinks are the Cloud Latte and Soft Latte (100+THB). If you like creamy coffee, those are good options. Otherwise they also have regular options like Americano that are also cheaper.

Lot also serve cafe-style food. I tried their grilled ham&cheese (100+THB) for breakfast and I’m a fan. Overall, a cafe that I would visit even if it’s just for people watching with a nice cup of coffee.

  • Payment Options: Credit Card (Min. 500THB), Prompt Pay (Business), Cash
  • Wifi Speed (Download/Upload): 156/47 mbps

Blue Coffee

blue-coffee-chiang-mai

Right opposite LOT, you find this cozy cafe with a minimal interior. The indoor space might appear quite small but there’s a second level (or level 1.5) with a few more tables. There are power sockets at most of them. In addition, they have some outdoor seats as well.

The cafe offer a range of beans from different countries, ranging from light to dark roast. In addition, they have several latte options. Soft Latte is one of the most popular choices. The Nutella Latte can be a good dessert although they also serve pastries and ice cream.

I often see people working from here both during the day and at night. The seats at the back are rather cozy and quiet, especially that armchair sofa.

There’s a bar (Component) on the actually second storey which opens at 6pm which is the reason why the cafe also stays open. There’s no loud music from the bar so you don’t really hear it from the ground floor.

They operate until 1am and opens at 7am on most days, so certainly one of the cafes in Chiang Mai with the longest operating hours.

  • Payment Options: Prompt Pay (Business), Cash, Credit Card
  • Wifi Speed (Download/Upload): 107/95 mbps

Beans & Liquor

beans-liquor-cafe-interior

As implied by the name, this spot runs as a cafe in the day and bar at night.

They have a few floors; level 2 and 3 are good for working with spacious tables. The couch seats on level 2 is probably the most comfortable. But on level 3, you can get a nice view of the street below. There are a good amount of power sockets around the space.

The place rocks a raw, industrial vibe, kinda like a minimalist gallery showroom. It has a spacious feel because of that along with good spacing between tables.

They serve both drinks and food. There is quite a good selection of cafe food from toast and pastries to pasta and rice, so you can do breakfast or lunch here. Apart from the regular coffee options, they also have some signature mixes.

cafe-food-in-chiang-mai

I like their honeycomb latte, and the toast is the big, chunky type that can be filling.

At night, they serve alcohol. Although the couple of times I have passed by in the evening, it looks very quiet. It is during the low season.

Bonus: They also have a cute cat with blue and green eyes.

Cafe With The Best View

Fohhide

best-cafes-in-chiangmai-thailand

One of my favorite cafes in Chiangmai because of the sweeping mountain and city view it offers. Fohhide is located on the 5th floor of a building which gives it the advantage vista point.

That said, it also means the cafe is not obvious unless you are searching for it. Follow the location on Google maps and look out for the building elevator.

Despite being pretty small, the cafe has both an indoor and outdoor area. You want to consider coming early because of the limited space, and also the sun can shine unto the outdoor zone quite fiercely in the afternoon.

Nevertheless, the indoor is very cozy with strong air-conditioning so it’s very comfortable. You still get the views from the windows. They usually also put a big fan outdoors to help cool the place down.

Fohhide offers an interesting selection of signature coffees, with funky names as well. I tried the “LalaLand” which includes espresso with Logan syrup and it turned out to be quite the combination.

They also have other non-caffinated options like kombucha, and a small menu of pastries.

Most of the seats here are high chairs/tables. If you plan on working here, either the outdoor tables, or the indoor counter seats will be most suitable. The wifi is very fast.

Other Chiang Mai Cafes For Working

Here are other coffeeshops in Chiang Mai that are great to spend some time with your laptop. They are by means inferior to the above, just no good way of categorizing them.

Nine One Coffee

This is a rather cozy cafe just off the main Nimman Road. You will often see people here with their laptops. It is good if you like to work on high tables and chairs.

The indoor space is not big but has a nice vibe, almost like a coworking zone. There are access to power extension plugs in a couple of the long indoor tables.

That aside, the cafe has good coffee and also board games. They also have a few food options that are more breakfast/brunch style.

  • Payment Options: Prompt Pay (Personal), Cash, Credit Card
  • Wifi Speed (Download/Upload): 762/563 mbps

Iris Garden Cafe

iris-garden-cafe-outdoor

Hidden in a turn off the main Nimman street you will find this florist shop that also operates a cafe. The cafe has a small garden that is well shaded and surrounded by greenery, so you can sit outside even during the warmer days.

There’s a small water fountain, providing that soothing water flowing ASMR.

That said, they also have an indoor seats with a cool, cozy ambience. Since this is a florist, you can expect plenty of plants around.

There is a good selection of pastries and coffee; I tried the Vietnamese Egg Coffee which was tasty and strong. They even serve tea by the pot if that draws your interest.

This is one of the hidden gems in Chiang Mai since the store is located at the end portion of the busy Nimman stretch, so it is usually not crowded. A great space to enjoy some peace and tranquillity.

Zohng Coffee

zohng-cafe-chiang-mai

This is a cafe restaurant located as part of a hostel in the old town. It is big with large amount of standard tables. Therefore, quite popular among laptop workers.

The food and drinks menu is pretty extensive compared to the small city cafes. Many people like to come for the breakfast, although I haven’t tried the food myself.

I like the second floor area which is also part of the hostel’s common area. The counter tables overlook the ground floor so you get a nice view.

Here’s a tip: If you don’t like the height of counter chairs, just swap in one of the regular chairs in the common area. I find it to be the best height compliment to the table.

The interior of the place is beautiful, rocking bit of an old charm with the bricks and wooden furnishings. I particularly adore the book shelves.

One of the common complaints like is the lack of air-conditioning with Thailand’s weather. But it is by no means hot with all the ceiling fans. So if you prefer nature airflow, you will enjoy this more “natural” aspect of the cafe.

Hang & Craft

cafe-interior-layout

This is not just a cafe but also a crafts shop which makes it incredibly interesting. The interior is filled with beautiful craft products and wooden furniture.

There is a variety of seatings for high desk to couches and standard tables. Some of them looks out into the streets. The ambience is nice and chill; the back area is typically darker but quieter, and there’s a big wooden desk.

hang-craft-cafe-chiang-mai

Some of the tables have access to power sockets. I also spotted a power extension cable at one corner so if you really need it, simply ask the staff. They are very friendly and helpful.

Coffee here is great and they also have a small selection of cakes. I consider the pricing to be mid-range. They are not as cheap as your regular local eateries, but also not as expensive as some of the modern cafes around.

DeMay Coffeehouse

demay-cafe-chiang-mai

A cafe under one of the condo buildings. Very high internet speed which makes it great for working. There are also power sockets available to some of the tables outside and inside

The breakfast waffle and mango is very beautifully plated and filling. I also tried their frappe which is not bad.

The indoor space is charming, some of the tables here are spacious and good for working. They also have a nice outdoor garden space with seats. The mosquito repellent by the counter should come in handy if you’re planning to sit outdoors.

Service is actually fine but a bit lacking after getting spoilt by the passionate hospitality at most restaurants and cafes in Chiang Mai.

Salad Concept

cafe-salad-concept-food

Ok this is more of a restaurant than a cafe but the vibes are the same. If you are into healthy foods, this is the place to come for clean eats. There’s a branch in Nimman, and another bear the Old Town gates.

It’s a relatively popular restaurant but the Nimman branch is quite big. It’s bright and airy which fits the whole health theme.

The menu is huge, took me ages to make a decision. And don’t worry, they don’t just serve salads. You can still find stuff like burgers, rice, quinoa, soup etc.

Food prices here are on the higher end of common restaurants which is not surprising. However, if you are really on a budget there are still some options below 100THB when I visited. So it’s not like bank breaking, just not as affordable as your street eats.

Drinks are quite regularly priced if you are not going for something super fancy. And they have a huge selection as well from juices to coffee.

The tables are big and good for working. And many of them even have access to power sockets. If you like to observe the street, there are many tables next to huge windows that give you a nice view.

  • Payment Options (Nimman Branch): Prompt Pay (Business), Cash, Credit Card
  • Wifi Speed (Download/Upload): 356/510 mbps

Cafe Scene In Chiang Mai

The cafe scene is one of the things Chiang Mai is known for, which attracts remote workers to this Northern Thai city. Nice ambience plus blazing fast internet speed just makes logistics easy.

There are actually many nice cafes outside the main areas that I have not been able to check out. If you want to wander a bit further, Chang Moi street leading to Ping River has some interesting cafes I’ve only passed by – not to mention the whole district right across the River.

15 Best Cafes In Tbilisi, Georgia To Work From [With Hidden Gems]

As the country of Georgia becomes more known to the world, this once very hidden gem is attracting an increasing amount of visiting tourists, expats and digital nomads. Unsurprisingly, there also seem to be a rise in the number of cafes in Tbilisi, the capital.

While I walked around the streets of Tbilisi, there are many coffee shops that caught my attention; each with their own unique character. They are great for taking a break, observing local life or even work from.

After cafe hopping for over a month in the Georgian Capital, here are some of my favorite coffee shops in Tbilisi, particularly for remote workers/nomads who want to work from a cafe.

Iveria Cafe

tbilisi-iveria-cafe

If you are looking for somewhere bright and airy, Iveria is a good option. It is located near the Rustaveli metro. The cafe is sort of perched on an elevated position where you can get a nice city view.

There is outdoor seating which are more popular during the warmer months. The indoor space features a very modern decor, and I think it operates as part of the Radisson hotel nearby.

That said, when you connect to the WiFi, I find the “Radisson_Guest” network has the most stable connection at the fastest speed (instead of the “Club Iveria” one).

The regular tables are spacious and great for working, even if you are having food and drinks. However, there is not a whole lot of those as the cafe provides a variety of seatings. You will also find many comfy sofas and tall desks, much like a hotel or airport lounge. And that is indeed the vibe of the place.

Also note that there are not a lot of power sockets around, so if you’re working with your laptop, make sure you come with it fully charged. Nevertheless, this is one of my favorite cafes because of the vibes, and prices here are surprisingly quite standard despite its seemingly posh location and decoration.

The menu is rather extensive with sweet and savoy options for food. You can get both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages here as well.

Puri Guliani

puri-guliani-cafe-tbilisi

This riverside cafe right beside Moxy Hotel and the Dry Bridge has a beautiful, tastefully decorated interior, along with an outdoor terrace facing the river as well.

So there are seats both inside and outside that offer scenic views of the water. As such, you will often see influencers/people taking photos here.

Prices here are on the slightly higher but the place is big, so if you are planning to work here, there is less worry about taking over a table. And you will almost certainly find people on their laptops.

There are a couple of long tables where you can take up just a single seat. They are also equipped with power sockets. One of them, on the second level, even faces the river.

Several of the other tables have access to power sockets along the wall, so just keep a lookout for it.

They have quite an extensive menu that includes both proper meal options and pastries, so it is more of a restaurant cafe. I visited a couple of times. Really enjoyed their Mille Feue Baklava, almond croissant and iced americano. They have quite a good selection of pastries.

Minda Cafe

minda-cafe-tbilisi

Located near the famous Liberty Square, this cozy cafe is one of the most ideal for working. In fact, when I first visited on a weekday afternoon, almost everyone there was working or studying.

I reckon a key reason why Minda cafe is popular among workers is the amount of power sockets available. They are embedded along the wall, and every seat has access to sockets.

The cafe has a great menu serving food, pastries, coffee and wine.

You will find your regular selection of coffees and also some “more special” options like your salted caramel, and matcha latte. I tried their raspberry latte since it was under the seasonal section (and you know me, I got to try the special stuff).

While I don’t consider myself a coffee connoisseur, I think coffee here is good. Prices here are quite standard for cafes. Bonus: They also provide drinking water for each table which is not that common among cafes in Tbilisi.

There are more tables at the back at the cafe, so walk in and check it out even if the tables by the entrance are fully occupied.

Most of the smaller round tables might be a bit tight if you are both working with your laptop and eating. However, the long bench seats are good for placing stuff, and there are a couple of bigger tables as well.

Cafe @ Museum of Fine Arts

cafe-tbilisi-museum-fine-arts

The cafe at the museum of fine arts is colorful and vibrantly decorated, almost like you have entered the world of comics. The cafe is relatively spacious and you can spot neon signs, plants, comic posters and interesting trinkets.

It is located on the main Rustaveli street, opposite the Parliament House. So it is conveniently close to the Liberty Square metro station.

They have an extensive menu of pastries, coffee/tea, alcoholic drinks and proper meal selections like pizza etc. Lots of options, but the prices are higher here than what you typically find. I tried their caramel croissant and was pleasantly surprised there’s even fresh cream inside.

One of the best things about this cafe for working, is undoubtedly the high speed internet. It is one of the fastest ones I have found in Tbilisi. There are power sockets along the wall.

There is a variety of seating and most of the tables are very spacious, so you can easily cowork with a friend here.

They also have outdoor seats which are good when the temperature is warm. As a bonus, you can even admire the Kashueti St. George Church while enjoying your coffee.

They also open until 11pm on some days, which is later than many other cafes. So it’s good for some late evening working.

Lit Cafe

cozy-lit-cafe-tbilisi

I always say Tbilisi has some hidden gems that are tucked in the background, usually past a dark alley/gate corridor.

And Lit Cafe is one of them. It is situated in a courtyard off the main streets of Davit Aghmashenebeli Ave, vey near to Marjanishvili metro station.

This is sort of a cafe and book club at the same time. That’s what charming about the cafe actually.

It is small and cozy, surrounded by bookshelves. The decoration has an old school charm about it. Bookworms would no doubt like it here.

It’s a great spot if you want a bit of tranquility while you work or read a book. Although it is a rather small cafe, the tables at the 4 corners all have access to power sockets. On a warm, sunny day, the tables in the garden are nice as well.

Coffee prices here is also cheaper than your usual cafe.

Stories Tbilisi Coffee & Tea

stories-cafe-tbilisi

A modern cafe with pretty chill vibes near Liberty Square, leading to the Solovaki district.

The cafe is not big but there are both round and counter top tables. It was calm and quiet when I visited on a cold Sunday morning, but I have heard that it is a rather popular spot for remote workers.

The tables are big enough if you want to work and eat at the same time. And you get good access to power sockets from almost all seats.

There are outdoor seatings that will be nice on a warm day as this is a nice street with many other restaurants and coffee shops. The indoor counter top seats that look out to the street are also good for people watching during the cold season.

Prices here are a bit higher, presumably because of the location. That said, they might have promotions going on; I happen to stumble on a brunch deal with free coffee on my visit.

There is quite a good variety of options for coffee.

Baho Cafe

baho-cafe-saburtalo-tbilisi

Near the Delisi metro station, you will find the modern Baho Cafe. This is where I consider one edge of the more bustling Saburtalo district, so its a good place to start your exploration of the area.

By the time I visited, I have done a good share of cafes in Tbilisi. Most boutique coffee shops in the Georgian capital isn’t very big; and Baho is no exception. This is just a rather standard size in Tbilisi.

The bright, modern interior is a style that tend to sit well with techies and the likes. No surprise it is a popular spot for remote workers, and the seats are suited for it.

In addition, there is a ton of power sockets around. The wifi speed falls more on the higher end compared to the average on this list.

The cafe also provides water which you can help yourself to. There is only one outdoor seat in case that is what you are looking for.

Prices here are sort of standard in the sense I find some things are slightly cheaper than average while other items are slightly more expensive, so it kind of balances out. Both the Americano and Pumpkin Cheese Pie I ordered were great.

Fragola

pastries-at-fragola-cafe

This is bright and classy restaurant cafe right on the main streets of Saburtalo. It is a great spot for food and meetings both business or casual.

Apart from the nice interior, the biggest standout for me are the pastries and coffee. It might not be surprising considering they serve Italian cuisine. Personally, they have one of the best Cappuccino I’ve had in Tbilisi.

I also tried their Italian burger – the patty and sauces were great. They have power sockets at certain seats if you need them. There are more seats at the back in case you find the seats at patio and front area are all taken up.

The internet speed is not very fast when I tested it on mobile, so that is probably the main thing to consider.

Caffeine By WorkIn

popular-coworking-cafe-in-tbilisi

Judging from the name of the cafe, you can already guess it attracts a lot of remote workers. I always see people with their laptops here when I pass by. In fact, when I visited, everyone in the cafe was on their laptop.

Almost all their tables and chairs are the standard setup which is decent for working. There are a good amount of power sockets around. The cafe is in the intersection of two main/busy streets which is good if you like to walk life go by outside while you work (as I do).

While the menu is not extensive, you have your standard selection of coffee, tea and pastries. They also have a self service water station.

The cafe has relatively simple decoration with a toned down lighting; the place gets good natural light from the big windows. The ambience is more clam and motivating since everyone else around is working.

Redman Cafe

redman-cafe-coworking

Within walking distance from Rustaveli Metro, Redman is a popular, modern cafe for working. When I visited in the afternoon, everyone there was on their laptops. So if you’re looking for a coworking ambience, this is a good option.

The tables are relatively spacious and standard for working. There is also a counter area that faces the street if you prefer that. Power sockets are spread out around the cafe so certain seats by the wall will have access to them.

The cafe has a good all-day breakfast menu for cooked food, including soups and salad. However there is not many options for cakes and pastries.

Natra Cafe

natra-restaurant-cafe-tbilisi-georgia

Natra cafe is right outside the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi. This is a restaurant and cafe serving Georgian food with options of soups, desserts, main dishes etc. I love the interior of the cafe, particularly the corner right next to the door.

When I visited during a winter evening, it wasn’t very crowded. I had dinner there while I waited for the sun to set. So if you like to visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral but also capture the impressive landmark at night, this is the spot to enjoy a meal, or coffee while you wait for time to pass.

There are a few power sockets scattered around the walls, so some of the seats have access to them.

Prices here is slightly higher than other districts (more of old town Tbilisi prices); also likely because it’s right outside one of the main attractions of the city.

But the food is good and you have quite a range of options on the menu, even if it’s for afternoon tea or a light meal. I tried their signature Bovari and really enjoyed it.

August Bakery

augusta-cafe-tbilisi

Located in the neighborhood of Saburtalo, this is a bakery/cafe with an interior that gives off a bit of that Starbucks vibe (particularly because of the green brand tone). It is modern and nicely decorated.

There is a great variety of coffees, juices, pastries and sandwiches on offer here, including plenty of healthy options such as salads. They also offer prep-on-order menu items like breakfast platter, crepes etc.

The cafe has both indoor and outdoor seats. The outdoor area is great for people watching as the cafe is located on one of the busy streets in the district. What’s interesting is that the outdoor seats even have access to power sockets, as does some of the indoor seats.

I reckon this is more of a breakfast/brunch spot, but they also do serve cocktails. Prices here are quite standard, might even be slightly cheaper. When I visited, there wasn’t any music being played in the background, so if that is what you prefer, it can be a rare find.

Prospero’s Books

prospero-bookstore-cafe-tbilisi

This is one of the few book stores in Georgia that offers English books, so bookworms will adore this place. They also operate as a cafe, with a big outdoor garden area.

Depsite being situated on the bustling Rustaveli avenue, it is like a tranquil paradise since there is a short passage before getting to the courtyard.

They have quite a selection of coffee and tea, and they sell coffee beans by weight too. You can also get typical cafe food like sandwiches and pastries here.

Unsurprisingly, you will often find people on their laptops here. The interior is calm and has some power sockets if you need them. Otherwise, the garden is a popular option during the warmer seasons.

Corner House Coffee

corner-coffeehouse-tbilisi

Located very near to Lit Cafe (as well as Marjanishvili metro), Corner House Coffee has a very chill vibe. It’s on the second storey overlooking the main street.

The cafe isn’t very big, but has huge windows and even a balcony that is superb for people watching. I love how the natural light shines in during the day. It’s like you have your piece of tranquil paradise despite the bustling street down under. A best of both worlds.

There are plenty of power sockets for the tables indoors.

The only thing here is that the internet speed isn’t great. I had no problem just surfing the web for information. But if you are working with large files that needs uploading/downloading, this is probably not the best cafe option.

Nevertheless, we decided to include Corner House because overall its a convenient and nice coffee spot in Tbilisi. And I still find people working their laptops every time I visit.

They do have a few pastry options, but I would say this is primarily a drinks spot.

Chernyi Cooperative Coffee Roasters

This is another bonus mention because I have never been in it before. It has been on my list, yet never really a priority.

The reason is that every time I pass by it, the cafe is filled with people on their laptops. So clearly this is a great spot for working. Although it’s not big, there is always people.

The cafe looks modern and nice, but the tables seem a bit too small to my liking. It’s more of a one laptop per table kind of size.

Nevertheless, I recommend checking it out if you are looking for more options. It is located on the vibrant Davit Aghmashenebeli Ave; so it’s quite a popular area.

12 Incredible Experiences To Discover The Best of Lyon [With Local Recommendations]

A city nestled between the Saône and Rhône rivers, Lyon is not just a Metropolis, but also has an incredibly charming side from its long history. As we spent a week wandering the mysterious traboules, discovering museums, and most importantly, diving into the food culture, here is our take on some of the best things to do in Lyon.

lyon-main-square

While many may assume Paris to be France’s gastronomy capital, Lyon actually holds that crown. The Lyonnais are passionate about food and proud masters of their culinary traditions.

As foodie travelers, this instinctively became a side of Lyon that we sought out the most, and it was totally worth the adventure. Of course, the main highlights of the city are not to be missed as well.

Taste the Traditions at a Lyonnais Bouchon

When we look at the food scene in Lyon, we have got to talk about the bouchons. This is a uniquely Lyon term referring to these cozy local eateries that serve up traditional Lyonnaise dishes.

traditional-lyonnaise-bouchon

Now, true bouchons are not just about the menu but also the overall vibe. For example, they usually have wooden tables and chairs cloaked in red and white checkered cloths, placed closely together with a communal and homey vibe.

While any restaurant can call themselves a bouchon, there is a certification badge for those that are officially recognized as Lyonnaise Bouchons.

Out of the thousands of restaurants in Lyon, there are only 22 brands that have earned that official recognition. For an authentic Bouchon experience, you want to visit those with the badge.

Our recommendation, and the one we tried, is Daniel & Denise. It is run by renowned French chef Joseph Viola who holds a “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” title. This honor is awarded to top-quality craftsmen who are the best of the best in their craft.

meat-pate-at-bouchon

There are 3 restaurants in the city, and we went to the one in Saint-Jean. Joseph Viola is particularly known for his pâté en croûte having won the world championship in 2009, so that is definitely a must-try dish.

We also tried the homemade pike quenelle, which is a classic Lyonnaise dish; and the poached egg in red wine sauce. Both dishes were rich and flavorful. For dessert, we had the fluffy floating island which includes pink pralines that Lyon is so known for.

Savor Regional Produce at L’Atelier des Augustins

laterlier-des-augustins-restaurant

For a dining experience that will open your eyes to the incredible bounty of the Lyon region, you have to hit up L’Atelier des Augustins. This intimate fine dining spot takes you on a journey to rediscover local produce in the most creative and mind-blowing ways.

Rather than an a la carte menu, they do a 6-course surprise tasting menu highlighting ingredients that are all sourced within 200km of the city. You won’t know what inventive dish is coming until it’s placed right in front of you.

Let me tell you, it did not feel like 6-courses. By the end of it, it felt like I had gone through 8-9 courses and was more than full.

fine-dining-in-lyon

The dishes had an interesting combination of tastes and textures that guided us to appreciate the ingredients in a new way. Simple fares like beetroots and carrots take on a refreshing new form that we don’t usually think of.

There is usually a change in the menu every 4-6 weeks to showcase the best seasonal produce at the time.

It is incredible how the chefs are able to conjure up these plates, but it’s clear they have an obsessive passion for their craft as you observe them meticulously at work in the open kitchen.

You can go all-in with wine pairings if desired, either getting a different glass tailored to each course, or as many/few as you’d like. Just let your server know and they are more than happy to provide recommendations.

The restaurant can also cater to different dietary needs, and will check beforehand. I got to say, some of the vegetarian alternatives looked so attractive visually that I almost had FOMO (fear of missing out), but the amazing meat dishes quickly alleviated that.

where-to-eat-in-lyon

The restaurant only has a single seating per table each night, ensuring they deliver an impeccable dining experience. That is also why you should definitely make a reservation early.

This is an experience we highly recommend, as you get to immerse yourself in the tastes of the region through an elevated, creative lens. It is also the perfect activity for a memorable evening with someone special as well.

Discover Up-and-Coming Culinary Talents at La Commune

visit-la-commune-lyon

Now that we have checked out the traditional restaurants and the high-end dining, it’s time to find out more about those who hold the future for the capital of gastronomy.

La Commune is the place to grab some seriously good eats at great prices. This is not just a food hall, but basically an incubator for up-and-coming food entrepreneurs to test out their restaurant concepts. This is a relatively huge space with an outdoor terrace.

la-commune-food-incubator

When we visited on a Sunday, the place was bustling with families, students, you name it. There were about 8 different food stalls representing cuisines from all over – Japanese, French, African, Chinese, Afghan, and more. These entrepreneurs typically stay for 6 months to a year, so you can also expect consistently changing options.

Don’t assume that the taste or quality is compromised just because these are new entrepreneurs. We tried food from three different stalls and by the end, we were both full and satisfied. For a main dish, you’re looking at around €11- €13 on average, while similar places outside would cost you around €15+.

almond-french-crepe

We can definitely see the appeal for locals to keep visiting. You have many different options under one roof at affordable prices. There’s also a self-serve beer station and a cafe operated by La Commune.

In addition, La Commune hosts fun events like karaoke, drag shows, dance parties, and more, which is why it is extremely popular during the weekends. Check their website for what’s happening during your visit! It’s a really lively atmosphere.

Graze Through the Delectable Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse

This iconic marketplace in the city center is named in honor of the “pope of gastronomy” – Paul Bocuse. Widely known to be the most legendary French chef, he is well respected throughout France, particularly in Lyon where he was based.

At the Lafayette entrance, you will find a beautiful image of Paul Bocuse painted on the building facade across the street. We were told that if you visit at night, there is even an animated projection of the famous chef.

seafood-at-paul-bocuse-market

The marketplace itself features over 50 different restaurants and vendors offering both local delights and regional produce.

While the prices at Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse tend to be higher than your average local market, this is reflected in the quality of the food and ingredients you can find here. Some of the stalls are even “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” awardees.

charcuterie-plate-with-wine

If you have never tried frogs before, Baba La Grenouille is a popular spot for that. Another common snack/lunch option that locals indulge in here is really a board of cured meat and cheese with wine, complemented by a nice time with friends. This is what we went for and don’t let it fool you, it is surprisingly filling.

pastries-in-lyon

Apart from food, one of the most interesting things here is learning the culinary heritage of Lyon. While male chefs tend to dominate the industry now, it was actually the “Mères Lyonnaises” or “Mothers of Lyon” that kickstarted Lyon’s gastronomic scene in the mid-1700s.

You will be able to learn more about some of the history and influential chefs of that time here. Many of the alleys in the marketplace are named in honor of them.

Discover Specialty Coffee Bliss at Loutsa Cafe

You will notice in France that it is common for people to conclude their meal with a coffee.

While the French have a huge coffee drinking population, the specialty coffee market is actually quite new to the country. If you are into specialty coffee, Loutsa cafe needs to be on your Lyon itinerary.

There are several outlets in Lyon, and most are rather well located around the tourist zones so it wouldn’t be hard to stop by any one of them. We actually passed by at least three locations.

loutsa-cafe-lyon-7

This boutique but growing brand started right before the COVID pandemic and has battled through challenging times to its current success.

The branch at Pl. Jules Guesde (Loutsa Lyon 7) is a cozy spot with laid-back vibes. There were people working on their laptops, friends catching up over a cup of Joe, and even elderly folks just savoring each sip while reading their newspapers. It feels like your modern cafe, yet with a very local vibe.

As soon as we walked through the cafe door, the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans hit our noses – roasting to order is their whole deal.

loutsa-specialty-cafe

What stood out about the place is the passion of the staff; they really enjoy exposing more people to the nuances of specialty coffee.

While the consumer market is their main business, they also supply coffee beans to businesses, including some very reputable brands. This is just a testament to the quality they serve.

They’ve got their branding down too, like the clever periodic table-style flavor chart decorating the space.

loutsa-coffee-beans

Apart from getting a freshly made cuppa here, you can also buy beans and other coffee-related accessories here. In addition, they have workshops that are great for getting acquainted with specialty coffee; you can even gift the experience to coffee-loving friends.

Delve Into Intersecting Worlds at Musée des Confluences

As the most popular museum in France outside of Paris, you can’t miss the Musee de Confluences. The building itself which looks like a futuristic spacecraft is literally hard to miss, which is also why you should definitely visit even if you are not a “museum person”.

musee-confluences-architecture

You can wander through most of the museum for free; a ticket is needed only if you are visiting the exhibitions. Just the museum’s architecture and interior design are so worth exploring.

On the top floor, you have an impeccable view of the rivers, confluence, and cityscape; on a good day, you might even see Mont Blanc.

Best of all, there is also a cafe here. If I were staying longer, you can bet this is one place I would revisit just to grab a drink, work on my laptop and soak in the views.

That said, we highly recommend going through the exhibitions. At €6 a ticket (at the time of our visit), this is really worthwhile. This museum is a mix of different topics from natural history and science to ethnography and anthropology.

If you have the Lyon City Card, admission to the museum is included!

confluences-museum-exhibits

The thoughtful exhibitions exploring where nature and human worlds intersect do prompt deeper thoughts about life, culture, and human behavior. There are both temporary and permanent exhibitions so you can really spend hours here.

Complementing its location at the confluence, the whole museum works around this theme of convergence of different perspectives/approaches/angles. You can see it in the architecture where lines going in different directions ultimately meet at a single point. You will see it in the approach they take toward designing exhibition spaces and the user experience.

musee-confluences-lyon-interior

And how do I know this? One of the main reasons I think this museum is so successful is the free “flash visits” they offer. These are 10-15 minute guided tours where museum mediators give you a nice intro to the museum and the highlights of the exhibitions. I highly recommend doing that before going around on your own, it really gives you a great foundation to start exploring the museum.

Meander Along the Confluence’s Rejuvenated Riverfront

Speaking of the confluence, this area is where Lyon’s two major rivers – the Rhône and the Saône converge. The La Confluence is also one of the city’s most fascinating districts. This once gritty industrial neighborhood has been revitalized in recent years into an innovation hub with a vibrant waterfront.

lyon-confluence-riverside

One of the first things you’ll notice is the striking modern architecture that seems to defy gravity, such as the sleek Musée des Confluences with its deconstructed geometric forms.

Nearby, you have the luminous green Euronews building that cries out for attention, right next to the equally striking MOB hotel where we stayed in Lyon. On the way to the Confluence mall, the bright orange Cube Orange building houses galleries, creative workspaces, and a panoramic rooftop overlooking the rivers.

la-confluence-orange-cube

The riverfront itself is a popular hangout, with paved pathways perfect for strolling, biking, or just watching the river traffic drift by. On sunny days, you’ll find locals and tourists relaxing on the grassy areas with picnic spreads.

Half the fun is simply wandering and taking in the modern architecture juxtaposed with renovated historic buildings and repurposed factories. Also keep an eye out for quirky public art installations that may pop up periodically. As night falls, the entire confluence area takes on a magical vibe, with the unique buildings and bridges lit up in dramatic lighting displays.

Glide Along the Saône for Lyon’s Iconic Riverscapes

The Rhone and Saone rivers are both historically important and ever-iconic features of the city. And for a relaxing way to take in Lyon’s iconic sights, hop aboard a classic river cruise along the Saône. These 1-hour tours depart regularly from the docks near Bellecour Square in Vieux Lyon.

If you have the Lyon City card, this is included as one of the free activities that come along with the card.

saone-river-lyon

As the ferry gently trudges along the tranquil Saône, you will get a different perspective of the city’s greatest hits from the water. For photographers, being on the water provides plenty of unique vantage points. Time your cruise for sunset hour to capture the city bathed in warm light.

You’ll float past different Renaissance buildings in Vieux Lyon, and of course, see the striking Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière atop the hill. Another highlight is the views of the elegantly arched bridges connecting the river’s two banks. On the modern end, catch a glimpse of the Confluences museum’s space-age architecture where the Rhône meets the Saône.

The cruise guides will narrate and point out other landmarks as you go, like the Vieux Lyon Renaissance district with its tiled rooftops and secret traboule passageways. There is both French and English commentary so you can learn all about Lyon’s rich history and ties to the rivers.

Admire the Views at Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière

Now, one of the most iconic landmarks that will catch your attention is this stunning church perched on the city’s famous Fourvière hill. It’s visible from just about every corner of the city. This is none other than the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière.

basilica-notre-dame-fourviere

The ornate 19th century basilica is hard to miss with its impressive architecture, brilliant white façade, and clearly, its location. You can comfortably get up the hill using the funicular. And this is not one of those purely touristic things; it is used daily by locals and has been around since 1878.

As you approach the basilica, get ready to be amazed by the intricate details and soaring towers. This is one of those structures which is both impressive on the outside and inside. Spend some time in the ornate interior, marveling at the mosaics, stained glass windows, and beautifully painted ceilings.

basilica-interior-architecture

You will notice that the interior is rather different from your typical European churches. The green and gold color combination is not a common sight, but no less majestic with a mix of Byzantine, Gothic, and Romanesque influences.

There is also a crypt that is open for visits. Note that this section closes earlier than the rest of the church, so if you plan on checking out the crypt you should go earlier (before 6pm is a safe bet).

lyon-city-view

Apart from the basilica, another key reason people come up here is for the sweeping panoramic views of the city skyline. From this high vantage point, you can see the change in architecture as the city expands outwards, which gives you an idea of how Lyon developed through the different eras.

Step Back in Time at the Théâtre Gallo-Romain de Lyon-Fourvière

Now that you’re on the hill, there’s another landmark here to visit. For a trip back to ancient Roman times, head down to the incredibly well-preserved Théâtre Gallo-Romain on Fourvière Hill. It is just 5 minutes walk from the Basilica.

roman-amphitheatre-lyon

This massive stone amphitheater dates back to around 15 BC, making it one of the oldest ruins of its kind in Lyon. Nevertheless, it is remarkably well restored, including some ornate carvings and columns.

The sheer scale of it is rather impressive, and it is said to have had an initial capacity of over 10,000 spectators! The theatre is free to visit but you can also take a guided tour. There’s also a museum detailing more of the site’s history which requires a ticket.

Along with the smaller Odeon Theatre nearby, the place is still used periodically today for concerts and performances, including the annual Nuits de Fourviér (Nights of Fourviére) festival. So if you are visiting then, definitely see if there’s an event going on here. We can only imagine how magical it is with the city view as the backdrop.

Explore the Mysterious Traboules of Lyon

Regardless of whether you are taking the funicular up or down the Fourvière hill, you will be in the iconic old town. While the old city is clearly full of charm by itself, one of the most intriguing attractions here is the traboules – a network of hidden passageways that weave through houses and courtyards.

explore-lyon-traboules

These secret covered routes date back to the 4th century and are believed to have served several purposes. They were used to transport water from the Stone River to the upper districts. Some allowed silk workers to transport materials between the city and river without going outside, which helped keep the goods dry when it was raining.

It is said that about 500 traboules still exist across the different districts of Lyon today, and winding through them is like stepping back in time. The longest one at 54 rue St-Jean (in Vieux Lyon) cuts through several courtyards and leads to Rue du Boeuf.

Even French tourists come to Lyon just to experience strolling through these medieval pathways lined with vintage architecture. As the locals say, some of the best secrets of Lyon are behind closed doors, so always explore deeper than what you see on the surface.

lyon-traboule-passages

Not all traboules are open to the public though, since many are located within private residential buildings. The ones that do allow visitors have a small sign displayed, so you’ll know which ones are okay to duck into. Just be mindful of residents going about their day – don’t go over locked gates or wander up to residential corridors.

As an incentive for buildings to open their traboules, the city government actually covers the cost of utilities for those who allow for public visits. It’s a small price to pay to allow visitors to experience this unique piece of Lyon’s cultural heritage.

Exploring the traboules is an adventure in itself, as you’ll never know just where the winding corridors may lead – from vaulted ceilings to spiral staircases to sun-drenched courtyards. You will even see a mix of features from different eras like an electric box next to an ancient well; it’s incredibly interesting.

Retrace the Silk Heritage in Croix-Rousse

Lyon essentially has 2 hills, one is Fourvière Hill as mentioned, and the other is Croix-Rousse Hill. Apart from the old town, Croix-Rousse is another district that is so important in Lyon’s history.

croix-rousse-lyon-france

This distinctly working-class neighborhood was once the beating heart of Lyon’s booming silk industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. Although it is kind of a dwindling trade, you can still glimpse remnants of Croix-Rousse’s silk-making past. Most of the buildings here have relatively high ceilings since they also used to be factories.

As you wander the winding passageways and climb the steep stairs between buildings, it is not just a good workout but also kind of thought-provoking, seeing how history has come and passed.

Today, the district is one of Lyon’s trendiest areas, while maintaining its historic character. Cafés, artisan shops, and street art installations have breathed new life into the renovated workshops and apartments.

Don’t miss the impressive Mural des Canuts, an immense trompe l’oeil (optical illusion) fresco covering the side of an apartment building. This is one of the largest murals in Europe and depicts the working lives of the silk weavers who once called this neighborhood home.

A City That Leaves You Wanting More

Croix-Rousse

From tasting our way through the city to exploring the revitalized riverfront, and unlocking its medieval past, Lyon has an incredible ability to charm the visitors that dive into its secrets. And we are sure this is only the surface of it.

The French Lion City seamlessly blends its rich history with modern innovation and an incredible food scene. You can experience the Lyonnais’ passion for gastronomy and pride in their heritage through multiple facets. And it is these contrasts and layers that make Lyon so captivating.

Whether you’re a foodie or a culture vulture, Lyon is certainly worth checking out. We can’t wait to go back and discover even more tucked-away corners of this enchanting city between the rivers.

PIN THESE BEST THINGS TO DO IN LYON FOR LATER

Experience Review: MOB Hotel Lyon Confluence

When it comes to unique hotels in Lyon, the MOB Hotel is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive, and you can see why just from its exterior architecture.

The visually striking building resembles a 3D printed bird nest and is hard to miss even though there are several aesthetically interesting structures in the area.

mob-hotel-lyon-review

Situated near the iconic confluence where the Rhone and Saone river converge, the MOB Hotel is an interesting place to stay when visiting Lyon.

Overall Hotel Vibes

The hotel has a creative and fun ambience throughout. From the setup to interior decoration, it has a unique personality that stands out. The staff adds to the overall theme with their cheerful attitude and friendly service, making it a vibrant place.

MOB hotel also organizes many events, particularly during the weekends. These are open to the general public, and some of them are even free to attend. Even if you are not staying here, this is a good venue to participate in some fun activities.

Events can range from shows to workshops and even group sports activities like yoga and running. The hotel is typically bustling during the weekends, as is the surrounding area. This district is a cool hangout spot for locals.

Master MOB Room

The Master MOB room is airy and spacious, with the capacity to fit a family. It does feel kind of homey; and for a single person, it even resembles a studio apartment, just without a kitchen.

lyon-mob-hotel-room-bed

The rustic concrete wall with the wide space makes the room feel sort of like a loft; it is well complemented by the colorful interior decor that gives off a bohemian vibe. With a fun boutique accommodation like MOB, you find interesting elements that you don’t typically see in your standard hotels.

colorful-furnitures-in-room

The room comes equipped with a double bed and two sofas, both which can comfortably serve as a bed. I would know, since I spent a good amount of time just lounging on both of these cushy spaces after exploring the city.

Similar to the living area, there is plenty of space in the bathroom. While it is simply decorated, you will find all the necessary amenities.

There is no TV in the room, but instead there’s something even better; you actually get a projector screen which is perfect for a movie night if traveling with friends or family. The living room desk that comes with short colorful chairs are great for families with kids.

There’s even a full size fridge standing at the corner which I don’t think I’ve ever encountered in any hotel room.

Despite visiting during winter, my favorite part still had to be the outdoor balcony which showcases a refreshing river view. There are two doors which lead out to the balcony; that indicates how big the room is.

I spent most of my time on the sofa when in the room, doing some casual work. But my favorite working area in the hotel would actually be the restaurant/bar.

Restaurant/Bar

The hotel has a spacious restaurant/bar which is beautifully decorated. At one corner is a nice library area, and there are tables here which you can work from.

remote-work-hotel-restaurant

With the large, full length windows, the space receives a good amount of sunlight giving it an energetic feel.

And in the evenings, the bar really gives off the vibes with the fireplace lit up, and the warm, dim lighting. If you like background ambient noises while you work, this is actually a good place to grab a drink, listen to some music while you get productive.

And of course, it’s a great spot to unwind and relax if you don’t want to head out to the city.

mob-hotel-bar

Co-working Space

In addition, the hotel does have a paid co-working space/room that comes with its own mini pantry of snacks and coffee. It is open to both hotel guests and the public, and costs around €15/€35 for the day, depending on the package.

Hotel Breakfast Buffet

Breakfast at the confluence hotel will certainly satisfy the sweet tooth. While they do have the usual cold cuts and cheese, what stood out were the added variety of cakes, pies, cookies and muffins in addition to bread and croissant.

lyon-hotel-breakfast

You also get to boil your own eggs to your preference, and customize your own muesli bowl. There are a variety of fresh fruits that add to the healthy breakfast options. And of course, there is the usual selection of juices, coffee and tea available.

One of the best things about the restaurant is that it gets a lot of natural light in the day. It’s nice to have a view of the river and park while enjoying a morning meal.

Fitness Facilities

While there is no gym in the hotel, the area in which the hotel is located is great for exercising outdoors. The riverside is a beautiful spot to run or cycle along and you will see many locals doing so.

lyon-confluence-riverside

In addition, right next to the bus station/car park nearby, there is a fitness corner which is good for calisthenics and other workouts.

The Confluence Mall also has both your regular gym and a climbing gym. While these businesses might change/move, I expect there will always be fitness facilities in this district due to its modern nature and the resident demographic that it will attract.

Hotel Location – La Confluence

la-confluence-district

That said, the location of the hotel is particularly interesting, especially if you’ve never visited Lyon and are just looking on Google maps. It is situated in the La Confluence district that might seem rather off course from the city center.

However, this is actually an up and coming district that the city is developing into an innovation and new tech hub. It’s a growing and modern part of the city with a very interesting architectural landscape. You can find a variety of amenities, restaurants and shops at the Confluence Mall near the hotel.

confluences-museum

Some of the key highlights in the area are the riverfront by the hotel, and the Musee de Confluences located right across the road. As the most visited museum in France, outside Paris, a trip to Musee de Confluences is definitely one of the main things to do in Lyon.

This area is also a popular spot among locals during the weekends. You will see families coming out to enjoy the riverside, the park and the museum.

only-lyon-sign

Therefore, the district is relatively well connected with frequent transportation. I recommend getting the Lyon City Card that covers the city public transport network, making it convenient to travel around.

A Hotel With Personality

mob-hotel-library-area

The MOB Hotel was an enjoyable place to stay in Lyon that’s full of character. The creative, fun vibe and friendly staff made it a lively and vibrant accommodation.

While it’s not in the city center, the La Confluence neighborhood has its own share of gems to discover.

If you want something a bit different from a standard chain hotel, with a fun bohemian vibe and a lot of personality, the MOB is definitely an option to consider when traveling in Lyon.

Experience Review: Pullman Paris Montparnasse Hotel

With an established brand like Pullman, you know you can expect a quality of service, and it is certainly no different at the Pullman Paris Montparnasse Hotel.

Despite the large number of guests and also events going on, the staff is always friendly and ready to help. They make an effort to greet or smile at you in the corridors even if they might be engaged in other tasks.

Overall Vibes

Although I arrived on a gloomy, rainy day, the Pullman hotel had a vibrant and energetic feel, bustling with activity. The hotel is tastefully decorated and has a modern, upscale aesthetic.

accor-platinum-lounge

My room was ready on arrival but since I wasn’t in any rush, I took the opportunity to enjoy the privileges of the VIP area. They have a locally crafted beer “Kiki de Montparnasse” which I definitely recommend trying. You can also get this in the Filia restaurant bar at the lobby.

Executive Deluxe Room

Checking into the Executive Deluxe room, the living space has the standard layout with a king size bed and a spacious working desk right in front of a massive TV. This is complemented by a sofa and small desk by the side.

A long desk that fits all my work gear

You will be pleased to know that the TV does have a casting function, so you can stream your Netflix, YouTube or other apps on it.

The hotel is a huge, tall building and my room was located on the 20+ floor. It has an incredible view of the city which is a superb backdrop when I’m doing my morning yoga in the room.

room-view-of-paris
Amazing view of Paris from the room

The bathroom is spacious with a wide sink that minimises splashing and also features a rainfall style shower. It is segmented from the bedroom by a full mirror wall/door which makes the room look even bigger visually.

One of the advantages of staying with an international brand like Pullman is the comprehensive suite of amenities provided within the room, including ironing board, bathrobes etc without having to ask for them.

In addition to the minibar which contained water and sodas, the welcome lemonade and chocolates was a nice touch.

The room is also equipped with a nespresso machine which is just great for my late night work. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised that when I asked for extra decaf capsules, they sent an entire pack of 10 to my room which is the first I have experienced in any hotel.

paris-hotel-minibar
A Nespresso machine is always a plus

Sure, I didn’t need 10 and it’s not like coffee capsules are anything very premium, but it’s these generous gestures that make a good impression on the guest.

Convenient Location

One of the prime advantages of the Pullman Montparnasse is its exceptionally convenient location. It is situated adjacent to major amenities that you might require.

montparnasse-train-station
Montparnasse train station also has shops and food places

For one, the Montparnasse train station is right across the street. So if you’re arriving or leaving from there, you’re in luck.

Otherwise, the area is replete with a plethora of restaurants, bars and cafes, so there is an abundance of food and entertainment options right at the footsteps. Adjacent to the hotel, there is a mall with shopping and an energetic food hall. And if you need anything from a supermarket, you have a selection of different brands within a 3-5 mins walking radius.

vibrant-hotel-district
A vibrant neighborhood both during the day and at night

From the other exit of the mall, you will find the Gaîté metro station. Even if it is rainy, you can get to this station staying mostly dry. The Edgar Quinet station is also a brief 5-min walk away. With these two lines, you can essentially get access to North-South and East-West of the city area respectively.

mall-food-hall

The hotel is also of walkable distance to notable landmarks such as the Jardin du Luxembourg. And there are several museums in the vicinity, such as the Bourdelle Museum and Musée de La Poste.

Remote Work Features

As a popular location for not just accommodation but also events, Pullman Montparnasse boasts great facilities for any work-related needs.

Wifi

The hotel features a robust wifi, with the speed of 20+ mpbs upload and download. Despite the hotel’s vast size, I found that connectivity remained stable and strong throughout different areas.

In-Room

With a big brand like Pullman, you can confidently expect a standard, functional layout. This means the room has a proper work desk setup that includes a long desk and comfy chair.

There is a nice muted round desk lamp that provides ample brightness for work without causing eye strain. This is ideal for working at night, particularly if you have a partner who is sleeping.

They also have a row of power sockets catering to various plug types, so if you did not bring a travel adapter, you actually won’t need one here.

Lobby Area

In the main lobby area, you will find plenty of people working there during the day since the hotel also hosts events and conferences. Therefore, attendees may relax or work there between sessions.

If you like some ambient noise while working, this is an excellent spot to be. There are a variety of seating options here. Power sockets are also available around the area, along with a mobile charging station if needed.

In addition, the Filia restaurant right by the lobby is another appealing option with its vibrant interior. It serves as both a bar and restaurant and offers comfortable sitting. The seats in the back row have power sockets, so you can grab a drink and work here as well.

Food and Beverages

That said, right within the hotel itself you have several F&B options which makes it incredibly convenient if you don’t want to head out. They are open to both hotel guests and the general public.

Filia Restaurant: This is a restaurant bar that serves Italian cuisine with Mediterranean influence. It is rather popular during the day with people engaging in drinks and discussions.

Skybar: This is a rooftop bar with a view of the Eiffel Tower. You will need a reservation in order to get in, so make sure to book in advance.

pullman-paris-skybar

Grab & Go: Right by the Filia Restaurant, there is a Grab & Go corner with all sorts of handy snacks, food and beverages. If you are in a hurry, this can be a good option to grab something quick for the road.

grab-and-go-corner

Umami Burger: As you can guess from the name, this is a burger restaurant serving some American classics, with vegan and vegetarian options as well!

If you are staying at the hotel, this is where the morning breakfast buffet is served.

Breakfast In Hotel

Breakfast at Pullman Montparnasse is a real spread. The fact that it takes over the whole restaurant shows how popular the hotel is even during the winter season.

paris-hotel-breakfast-spread

There is a wide selection of hot and cold dishes, certainly one of the most extensive spread I’ve seen across different hotels. From grilled and fresh veggies to hearty bacon and sausages, there’s plenty to choose from; even a chef to prepare your choice of eggs.

One of my absolute favorite is the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables that they provide. Pullman Montparnasse makes it incredibly easy to enjoy a healthy and fulfilling breakfast if you are health conscious.

fresh-fruits-hotel-breakfast

Of course, you cannot forget the sweets and pastries while in France, and Pullman does well to showcase several of them including crepes and pancakes. The muesli bar has an absurd amount of selection, but I didn’t manage to get to it despite staying for 2 nights.

breakfast-pastries-paris-hotel
breakfast-buffet-in-paris

The stations are lined up through the full length of the restaurant from the fresh fruits and juice on one end, to the cold cuts on the other. So take a stroll around when you enter to see what’s on offer. I’m sure you won’t be able to try everything in a single sitting.

Power Fitness Gym

One of the most impressive features of the hotel for me was undoubtedly the gym – the sheer size of it. It is one of the biggest and most well equipped gyms I have seen in a hotel.

pullman-hotel-gym-strength
pullman-hotel-gym

Even with the full set of weights, strength and cardio equipment, punching bags etc, there’s plenty of space to move around for all sorts of training. Some of the stations are also equipped with workout routine videos, so if you don’t have your own regimens, you can easily follow one.

It’s always a bonus that the gym has stylish lighting and interior that gets you going.

paris-hotel-gym

And if you want to do some workout in your room, you can ask for an in-room fitness kit, which includes a mat and equipment for stretching and recovery, such as foam rollers. I only asked for a mat since that’s just what I needed.

Comfortable And Convenient Stay

All in all, Pullman Montparnasse hits the right spot for me. With its sweet location near so many cool spots and amenities, it made my time in Paris a breeze.

Whether I wanted to grab a quick bite, hop on the metro, or just chill in a cool neighborhood, it’s all within easy reach. The hotel itself had many convenient features like the gym, work spaces, and quality eats right on site that help me keep up with a healthy and productive lifestyle even while on the road.

After a day out exploring, it is just nice to come back to a modern and stylish room with great views to relax in. Regardless if you are traveling for work or leisure, it’s a solid option with attentive service and quality amenities.

I Stayed at a Spa Hotel in Zurich Built Inside a Former Brewery. Here’s What It Was Like

If you are visiting Zurich and only looking for accommodation in the old town, you are missing out on one of the real gems out here. B2 Hotel Zurich is just a few tram stops outside central old town, and it’s even within walking distance.

Sitting on top of a small hill, this unique accommodation is a hotel and spa which occupies the former Hürlimann brewery. Not only do you get stunning panoramic views from the roof, there’s a blend of history and modernity thoughtfully woven throughout this place.

P.S. Techies might also be excited to know that Google’s Zurich office is right beside it.

Overall Hotel Vibes

B2-zurich-hotel

B2 Hotel felt like an immediate winner from the moment I stepped through the door. At first sight, I already spotted two of the biggest features that attracted me to the hotel and we’ll talk about them later. But they were not the only standout parts of the hotel.

Despite having a relatively spacious lobby, the tone felt warm and comfy, particularly on a cold winter night.

hotel-lobby-sofa

Having stayed in my fair share of hotels around the world, one thing about the service here is that it’s not just professional but also sincere, which is not commonly experienced.

The check-in process is usually just admin, but when the receptionist starts showing genuine interest in your trip and wellbeing, it quickly builds on that connection. For me, it hit the right balance of both polished service and friendly charm that brings a homey vibe.

This actually also happens to be the first hotel on this trip where the staff offered to bring my bags to the room.

Hotel Room Review

I checked into a corner double room on the 4th floor of the hotel which overlooks Google’s office. The large entry space makes it extremely welcoming.

hotel-room-setup

There is a huge TV with a screen that can swivel around, and the whole thing is easily portable if you want to move it around. It also supports screen casting from personal devices, which I consider an important feature for hotel TVs these days.

There’s quite extensive control over the lights in the room which makes it easy to adjust the mood regardless if you are working or relaxing.

I also really enjoyed the bathroom which had a luxurious amount of space, particularly since I was just one person. The semi open concept made the whole room seem even larger than it already was.

room-bathroom-shower

The room is equipped with a Nespresso machine to satisfy my coffee indulgence. And the mini bar is stocked with local brands, which you know I just love. I always see it as a chance to sample a piece of local culture.

Of course, this included two bottles of Hürlimann beer! In addition, you have your still and sparkling water, a bag of Brewbee chips, as well as bottles of Michel Orange juice and Vivi Kola (This is a traditional Swiss Cola brand, established in 1938)

Hürlimannbad & Spa

The spa is one of the biggest perks of staying at the B2 Hotel. It is open to the public but hotel guests enjoy discounts for entry and certain additional packages like massages.

In addition, there is a direct entrance right within the hotel. So you don’t have to head out to the regular spa entrance.

entrance-to-spa

Even if you are not staying in the hotel, I would highly recommend visiting the Spa. It’s a superb evening activity particularly if you are traveling as a couple.

Despite staying 2 nights, I visited the spa three times. Twice at night and once in the morning; that shows just how much I enjoyed it.

Even though the place and views are stunning, there’s a strict no-photo policy so you can fully relax and stop worrying about getting a perfect shot (or getting photographed by others).

The spa consists of 3 major segments.

The Rooftop Outdoor Pool

Rooftop Pool With City Views | Photo Credit: Herlimannbad Spa Zurich

When I heard about a rooftop pool, I had envisioned maybe a regular swimming pool that is sort of sheltered from the winter cold.

Let’s say it exceeded expectations… significantly. This was an outdoor heated infinity pool with different jet streams throughout the pool. The best thing here got to be the views. You get a near 360 view of the surrounding, and even the imposing big chimney which is part of the historic brewery.

The day view is amazing, particularly if the sky is really clear. But at night, that’s when it gets magical. Steamy heated pool, romantic city lights, comfy heated waters, a perfect spot for couples to relax.

But hey, if you are traveling alone like me, it is an equally awesome experience.

I personally recommend you start with the rooftop pool. Then move on to the thermal baths which are underground.

Roman & Irish Baths

hotel-irish-roman-baths
Irish & Roman Baths | Photo Credit: Huerlimannbad Spa Zurich

After a dip (…a long dip) in the outdoor pool, take a lift down. The thermal baths are separated into 2 main segments.

On one side you will find the Irish and Roman baths. Here you can go through a series of steam rooms and different temperature pools. Don’t worry if you are not familiar with it. There’s a whole route including suggested time for you to follow. Your job? Just relax and enjoy the most out of it.

At the end of it all, you can further tone down at several comfy lounge areas with some warm tea.

Thermal Baths

thermal-baths-pools

Alternatively, head over to the other end where there’s a steam room, rainfall shower, emerald pool and a huge thermal pool on the backdrop of beer barrels.

It’s immensely soothing with a nice vibe. There are these lounge chair structures built right into the pool.

Right below this area, you will also find changing rooms and lockers if you need them. The lockers are activated with your spa entry bracelet. Everything is pretty convenient.

I did not anticipate spending that much time at the spa, but I stayed till closing time on both night visits.

Other Services

Apart from the steam rooms and pools, you can add on extra services like massages or body wrapping if you like. As mentioned, hotel guests even enjoy discounted prices for them.

There’s also a cafe within the spa where you can purchase food and beverages, or take a break in between dips. So you can literally spend hours in the spa if you want to.

Of course, I took advantage of my in-room mini bar which is just one level down, that’s why there’s a real perk to staying in the B2 hotel.

Remote Work Features

WiFi

B2 Hotel Zurich Wifi

B2 Hotel offers extremely fast Wi-Fi speeds of over 200+Mbps. There is great coverage throughout the hotel, so you can be sure internet won’t be an issue.

In-Room

The room is well set up for work purposes with a spacious desk at the corner and power sockets nearby. There’s a tall lamp right by it and the room gets a good amount of natural light during the day.

There is also a cushy sofa chair that is great for reading, brainstorming or even if you want to switch up your sitting posture.

That said, I did not actually spend much time working in the room because personally I LOVED the two common areas and spent most of my time in the hotel between the two. And the spa, obviously.

Coworking Area

coworking-space-hotel

This is actually a relatively new space that the hotel set up as they cater to more bleisure travelers and remote workers. Zurich is also, after all, a capital city with plenty of economic and international business activities.

The coworking area is charming, tastefully decorated and not distracting. It is extremely cozy at night, so much so I spent 3-4 hours working well into the wee hours there. Superb for productivity!

Despite not being a huge space, there’s plenty of seating options and also a different variety of them so you can take your pick. My favourite is the long desk.

working-at-b2-hotel

All the seats have good access to power sockets and there’s also extra desk lighting at some of them if you need it.

I’m going to let you in on a secret. Even if you don’t stay in the hotel, you are welcome to use that space as well. You can even grab a coffee or drink from the bar and get productive. Then maybe treat yourself to a nice spa session at the end of the day – perfect!

Library Lounge (Bar)

zurich-hotel-lobby

Speaking of the bar, this is THE centerpiece of the hotel. An exquisitely decorated dining area that looks like an infinite library featuring 33,000 books. It’s not just extremely photogenic but really has the vibes.

These books were all acquired from an old second hand bookstore that was closing down. The hotel owner bought up all of those books and set up this incredible, incredible common area that is now a standout piece.

amazing-library-lounge

If you look closely at the “chandeliers”, these are all made out of beer bottles that used to be from the factory. Remember when we said, it’s where history means modernity? You will find pieces of that theme all throughout the hotel.

Needless to say, this is a great spot for working as well. With all those books around you, you can’t help but get inspired. And if you’re a snack-while-working kind of person (which I am), you will be well taken care of by the hotel bar/restaurant.

The power sockets in this area are nicely hidden under the floor so it doesn’t look messy. Access points are scattered around so just look to the ground if you need one.

Refreshments & Fitness

Hotel Breakfast

One of the best things about breakfast is that it is held in this exquisite surrounding that I just cannot get enough of.

hotel-buffet-breakfast

The hotel breakfast buffet is not as big of a spread compared to huge hotel chains, but pretty well curated. You are treated to a good range of cold plates, from cured meats and salmons to cheeses and vegetables. There’s also a nice muesli and yoghurt selection.

For hot food, you can get eggs cooked to your preference, and even choose from a variety of toppings. The portion is very generous so you want to save room for them.

At the bread and pastries section, I loved that they provided bread baskets for you to carry your bread, so they are not just stacked on your plate. Small things like this show an attention to detail and customer experience.

hotel-breakfast-buffet

I always look out for anything special and unique about the breakfast spread in a hotel since they tend to be more or less the same. A standout item here, which was perfect for the winter season, is their ginger booster.

It was flavorful and strong, hitting the right spot every morning! I downed a couple of these each day to get an energetic start.

A Gym Like No Other

Now B2 Hotel might not have the biggest hotel gym I’ve seen, but it certainly has a uniquely charming personality. Why? Because it is nested within the historic beer factory settings.

Gym - B2 Hotel
B2 Hotel Gym | Photo Credit: B2 Hotel Zurich

You can be on the exercise bike, and right across you are looking at an engine of some sort from the old days. Above the rowing machine, you see a panel of craftsmen tools that are vintage looking.

It’s just incredibly interesting with those rustic vibes merged within modern fitness equipment.

Right at the back, you will find a wide open space with even more grandeur apparatus and equipment from past days. It is like a “mini” museum, and the hotel uses this area to host events.

This whole portion of the hotel is actually protected under some form of historic building act. So you literally get to, not just visit, but even work out in a historic zone. How cool is that?

historical-machinehall-b2-hotel-zurich
MachineHall | Photo Credit: B2 Hotel Zurich

Since this area is a protected zone, the hotel cannot make huge modifications to it (That’s how you know you are getting an authentic feel). Therefore, the gym is not as well heated here during winter compared to other parts of the hotel.

You can consider bringing along a jacket although I didn’t need one when I’m working out. In addition, you can also get yoga mats and other items like stretch bands etc to your room as well. I had ample space in mine to do some stretching and mobility work.

A Home Away From Home

Among all the hotels I have stayed in, B2 Hotel offers one of the balance between work and leisure. This is huge credit to both the exceptional spa, and an incredibly well designed lobby area.

After visiting the city, you know you have easy access to deep relaxation at the spa, or a productive environment for work in the room or at the lobby. My only issue is that I literally contemplated just staying in the hotel all day and enjoying the facilities.

Disclaimer: I was a guest of B2 Hotel Zurich. All opinions are my own.
