12. Oranges and Citrus

Oranges remain one of Florida’s strongest symbols.

Citrus groves, orange juice, roadside fruit stands, and orange images on state branding helped create Florida’s agricultural identity.

The industry became especially important during the 19th and 20th centuries. Warm weather and sandy soil supported large groves across central and southern parts of the state.

However, modern production has fallen sharply. Citrus greening disease, hurricanes, cold weather, development, and rising costs have damaged many groves.

Florida is no longer the unquestioned center of American orange production that older travel articles often suggest.

The connection still matters culturally and economically. Visitors can find fresh juice, marmalade, citrus candy, grove shops, and farm attractions, although the experience depends on the season and region.

Orange juice is the official state beverage, while the orange is Florida’s state fruit.

The decline of working groves also explains part of Florida’s changing landscape. Areas once covered with citrus trees have increasingly become housing developments, roads, and commercial districts.

13. Art Deco Architecture

Miami Beach is known for one of the world’s largest collections of Art Deco buildings.

The strongest concentration lies in the South Beach area, especially around Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue.

Many buildings date from the 1920s through the 1940s. They use curved corners, geometric shapes, horizontal lines, pastel colors, glass blocks, neon signs, and nautical details.

The area is sometimes called the Art Deco Historic District, although it also includes Mediterranean Revival and later modern buildings.

Seeing the architecture in daylight reveals its colors and details. Returning after dark shows how neon lighting changes the streets.

The hotels and restaurants along Ocean Drive can be expensive and noisy. Walking the district does not require staying directly on the busiest section.

A guided architecture walk can be useful because many details are easy to miss when the street feels dominated by traffic, restaurant menus, and crowds.

Art Deco is only one part of Miami’s visual culture. The city also has modern towers, Cuban commercial streets, Mediterranean-style estates, street art, and mid-century architecture.

14. Daytona Beach and Motorsport

Daytona Beach is closely linked with car racing.

Early speed trials took place on the hard-packed sand, where drivers used the beach as a natural racing surface.

The Daytona International Speedway opened in 1959 and became the home of the Daytona 500, one of NASCAR’s most important events.

The city still combines motorsport with a traditional beach-resort atmosphere. Certain areas allow vehicles to drive on the sand under controlled conditions, continuing a practice closely tied to Daytona’s identity.

Race weekends transform the area. Accommodation becomes more expensive, roads become crowded, and restaurants fill quickly.

Outside major events, the speedway offers tours and other experiences. Visitors with little interest in motorsport may find the beach, nearby parks, or smaller coastal communities more appealing.

Florida’s connection with racing also extends to Sebring, which hosts a major endurance event, and Homestead-Miami Speedway in South Florida.

15. The Gulf Coast and the Panhandle

Florida’s Gulf Coast covers a long stretch from the Panhandle to the Keys.

The Panhandle is known for pale sand, emerald-colored water, fishing communities, military bases, and beach towns such as Pensacola, Destin, and Panama City Beach.

This part of Florida often feels closer to Alabama and the wider Deep South than to Miami.

Farther south, the Gulf Coast includes Tampa Bay, Clearwater, Sarasota, Fort Myers, Naples, and many islands and coastal communities.

The water is often calmer than on the Atlantic side, though weather, currents, and storms still matter.

Southwest Florida is known for shelling, mangroves, wildlife, and sunsets. Sanibel and Captiva became especially associated with seashells because of their position and east-west orientation.

Hurricanes have caused major damage to several Gulf communities in recent years. Rebuilding can change beach access, accommodation, roads, and local businesses.

Current conditions should be checked rather than assuming that an older guide still reflects what is open.

16. Boating, Fishing, and Diving

Water shapes much of daily life in Florida.

The state is known for saltwater fishing, freshwater fishing, sailing, kayaking, diving, snorkeling, and recreational boating.

Florida’s coral reef tract runs from near Miami through the Keys and forms the largest coral reef ecosystem in the continental United States.

Coral bleaching, disease, storms, pollution, and warming water have caused serious damage. Responsible operators avoid touching or standing on coral and follow rules around protected areas.

Freshwater fishing is also important. Lakes across central and northern Florida are known for largemouth bass.

Visitors unfamiliar with local conditions should pay attention to weather, tides, lightning, currents, wildlife, and boating rules. Calm-looking water can change quickly during summer storms.

17. Cruise Ports

Florida is one of the world’s main centers for cruise travel.

PortMiami, Port Canaveral, and Port Everglades handle large numbers of cruise passengers. Tampa and Jacksonville also serve cruise routes.

Their locations make Florida a common starting point for trips to the Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico, and beyond.

Port Canaveral is often combined with Orlando, but it is on the Atlantic coast rather than beside the theme parks. Transport normally takes around an hour in light traffic and longer during busy periods.

Miami’s cruise port is close to downtown but separated by bridges and port roads. Staying in Miami Beach does not necessarily create the quickest transfer.

Cruise passengers often add only one night in Florida, which can create a rushed view of Miami, Orlando, or the coast.

Adding two or three days makes more sense if the aim is to see the destination rather than simply sleep near the ship.

18. Retirement and “Snowbirds”

Florida is strongly associated with retirement.

Warm winters, no state individual income tax, large retirement communities, golf, beaches, and established healthcare services have attracted older residents for decades.

The term “snowbird” refers to people who spend winter in Florida and return north during warmer months.

Seasonal migration affects traffic, rent, restaurant demand, and the general pace of life. Parts of southwest Florida and the Atlantic coast become noticeably busier during winter.

The Villages in central Florida is one of the country’s largest age-restricted communities. It has its own town centers, recreation facilities, golf courses, entertainment, and transport culture.

Florida is not only a retirement state. It also has young immigrant communities, universities, technology companies, tourism workers, military families, and rapidly growing cities.

Still, retirement and seasonal living help explain many features of the state, from housing developments and golf courses to healthcare networks and winter traffic.

19. Hurricanes and Tropical Weather

Florida is called the Sunshine State, but its weather is not simply warm and clear.

Summers are hot, humid, and stormy. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, particularly in central and southern Florida.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with the greatest risk usually later in summer and during autumn.

A hurricane does not need to make a direct hit to affect a trip. Flights, cruises, roads, parks, beaches, and businesses may close because of wind, flooding, storm surge, or evacuation orders.

Winter is generally drier and more comfortable in South Florida. Northern Florida can still experience cold spells and occasional freezing temperatures.

Summer travel can offer lower prices in some places, but it also means stronger heat, more insects, heavier rain, and a higher storm risk.

Lightning deserves attention as well. Florida has frequent thunderstorms, and beaches, boats, golf courses, and open parks should be left when storms approach.

20. Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park lies around 70 miles west of Key West.

It protects a group of small islands, surrounding water, coral habitat, shipwrecks, birdlife, and Fort Jefferson.

The huge brick fort was built during the 19th century to protect shipping routes and Gulf access. It later served as a military prison.

The park cannot be reached by road. Visitors arrive by ferry, seaplane, or private boat.

That isolation is part of the experience, but it also requires planning. Ferry tickets often sell out, and weather can affect transport.

A day trip allows time to explore the fort, swim, and snorkel, though it leaves little flexibility. Camping provides a quieter experience but requires visitors to bring their own supplies.

There are limited services on the islands, and there is no shop where forgotten food or equipment can easily be replaced.

Dry Tortugas feels very different from Florida’s busy resorts and theme parks. Its remote setting, clear water, historic fort, and difficult access make it one of the state’s most unusual destinations.

What Best Defines Florida?

Florida is often presented as a simple mix of sunshine, beaches, theme parks, and retirement communities.

All four are real, but they describe only part of the state.

Miami is shaped by Latin American and Caribbean migration. Orlando is built around family tourism but surrounded by springs, wetlands, and fast-growing communities. The Keys feel more connected to the sea than the mainland, while the Panhandle shares many cultural ties with the Deep South.

Florida’s natural landscapes are just as varied. The Everglades, freshwater springs, coral reefs, mangrove islands, Atlantic surf, Gulf beaches, and dry pine forests do not fit one tropical image.

For a first trip, it is better to choose one region than attempt the whole state. Orlando and the Space Coast work well together. Miami can be combined with the Everglades and upper Keys, while Key West deserves additional time. Tampa, Sarasota, and nearby Gulf beaches form another practical route.

The Panhandle requires its own journey, and Dry Tortugas needs advance planning from Key West.

Florida also connects naturally with nearby Southern states. Its Panhandle continues toward the beaches of Alabama, while northern Florida can be combined with the cities, food, and coast associated with Georgia.

What defines Florida is the overlap between tourism and everyday life, between built attractions and fragile natural systems, and between a familiar American vacation image and a state shaped by migration, water, weather, and constant change.
