Virginia is best known for its central role in early American history, particularly Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, and the homes of several U.S. presidents. Beyond its historical sites, the state is famous for the Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah National Park, Chesapeake Bay seafood, Virginia ham, Chincoteague ponies, and the long-running “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan.

Virginia changes significantly as you travel from east to west. The Atlantic coast and Chesapeake Bay feel very different from the mountain towns of the Blue Ridge, while Northern Virginia is shaped by its proximity to Washington, D.C.

1. The Historic Triangle

Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown form Virginia’s Historic Triangle, one of the clearest places to explore the early history of the United States.

The three destinations sit relatively close together and are connected by the Colonial Parkway. Although it is possible to see highlights quickly, spending two or three days in the area gives each site enough room to feel distinct.

Jamestown

Jamestown was founded in 1607 as the first permanent English settlement in what became the United States.

Its story includes the ambitions and failures of the English colonists, their complicated relationship with Powhatan communities, and the arrival of Africans in Virginia in 1619. These events eventually became entangled with the colony’s expanding system of racial slavery.

There are two neighboring Jamestown attractions, and it is easy to confuse them. Historic Jamestowne contains the archaeological remains of the original settlement. Jamestown Settlement is a museum with reconstructed ships, a fort, and a representation of a Powhatan town.

Colonial Williamsburg

Williamsburg became Virginia’s colonial capital in 1699 and remained its political center until the capital moved to Richmond in 1780.

3. Civil War History

Few states are as closely associated with the American Civil War as Virginia.

Richmond served as the capital of the Confederacy, and campaigns unfolded around Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Petersburg, the Shenandoah Valley, and other parts of the state.

The conflict effectively ended in Virginia in April 1865, when Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House.

Virginia has enough battlefields and museums to fill an entire trip, but visiting too many in succession can become repetitive. Choosing one or two major sites and combining them with Richmond or the Shenandoah Valley usually creates a more balanced itinerary.

4. Black History

Virginia’s history was shaped not only by presidents and battles, but also by slavery, resistance, emancipation, segregation, Black entrepreneurship, and the civil rights movement.

Richmond was once home to one of the country’s largest domestic slave-trading districts. The city later became an important center of Black business and culture, particularly in Jackson Ward.

Maggie L. Walker, born in Richmond in 1864, became a prominent business leader and the first Black woman in the United States to charter a bank and serve as its president.

5. Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive

Shenandoah National Park protects a long stretch of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northern Virginia.

Its defining route is Skyline Drive, which follows the mountain crest for 105 miles. Numerous overlooks make the scenery accessible without a demanding hike, while trails lead to waterfalls, rocky viewpoints, wooded valleys, and sections of the Appalachian Trail.

Driving the entire road takes at least three hours without long stops, and considerably longer if you hike or stop frequently. Checking the latest Skyline Drive conditions is worthwhile because severe weather can close sections of the road.

6. The Blue Ridge Mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway
