The strongest examples are not all found in Manhattan. The Unisphere gives Queens one of New York’s most recognizable public sculptures, while Brooklyn has memorials tied to maritime history and the Revolutionary War.

This list focuses on monuments, memorials, arches, and public statues rather than repeating the city’s broader architectural landmarks. Most are free to see, although visiting the Statue of Liberty requires a ferry ticket.

1. Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is the most famous monument in New York City and one of the strongest symbols of the United States.

Its formal name is Liberty Enlightening the World. French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, while Gustave Eiffel’s engineering team developed its internal structure. It was completed in France, shipped to New York in sections, and dedicated in 1886.
