Elounda is a quiet, charming village in the northern part of Crete in Greece. Beaches in Elounda are adored by families and are an ideal destination for couples because of their calm shallow waters and romantic mountainous landscapes.

Elounda beaches are also worth visiting for their proximity to historical landmarks and traditional taverns. Although beaches in Elounda are relaxing and calm, there is an abundance of activities on the beach such as safari adventures, water sports, and boat tours.

Most Popular Beach In Elounda

Elounda Beach


Elounda Beach, in comparison to other Elounda beaches, is full of life and vitality. Whilst other beaches are peaceful and quiet, Elounda Beach is popular for its local bars, welcoming hospitality, and adventurous water sports facilities.

This is a family-friendly beach and great for little children, as the sand is fine and golden, and the waters are shallow. Bring your sandcastle building kit to take advantage of the shoreline and have fun with your little ones.

For teenagers and young adults, there are a variety of activities available such as pedalos, water sofas, and inflatable rides.

The beach is also directly next to lots of taverns such as the Old Mill. In the evening it is worth considering taking a relaxing stroll to the port area and watching the sunset.

Royal Marmin Bay Hotel is beachfront and has private beach access, a children’s pool, and a spa center. There is free parking, an airport shuttle, and many rooms available with sea views.


Tranquil Beaches In Elounda

Plaka Beach


Plaka Beach is a small pebble beach with a unique view overlooking Spinalonga Island. It is one of the quietest beaches in Elounda, great if you are traveling alone or as a couple.

There is not much to do here except swim in the shallow waters and enjoy a delicious traditional meal. As a result, the beach is loved for its tranquillity. The location of Plaka Beach is what contributes to its popularity, as it is surrounded by small taverns and seafood bars.

Blue Palace Elounda is a beachfront accommodation in Plaka. There is a spa, fitness center and tennis courts. A range of rooms are available from classic to deluxe suites. The hotel also owns a beach club.

Spinalonga Beach


Spinalonga Beach is a beautiful rocky beach located on Spinalonga Island opposite Plaka Beach. It is one of the most mesmerizing beaches in Elounda due to its unique rocky landscape and refreshing cold waters.

It is unorganized and unspoiled, surrounded by a fortress and ancient ruins. Just set up your beach mat or tent and enjoy the peace of nature.

There are a couple of local taverns and shops nearby but it is recommended to bring water and snacks, and this beach is less touristic than the others. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a natural and historic beach, this is by far the best choice.

Cayo Exclusive Resort and Spa is found just over 1km from the beach. It is a modern resort with furnished rooms. Suites are available for two to six people and are all furnished with as well as offering sea views.

Clean and Family Friendly Beaches In Elounda

Skisma Beach

Skisma Beach is a small but beautiful sandy beach in the bay of Elounda. It is clean and organized, therefore a great family-friendly option.

Young children adore this beach because of the flat sandy terrain and kid’s playground, whilst the older children enjoy the water sports facilities. Additionally, the beach is unprotected, making it windy at times and creating big waves for easy surfing.

There are many amenities such as toilets and beach showers making it easier to care for children, as well as plenty of taverns nearby.

Kalypso Suites Hotel is situated 300m from Skisma Beach. There are rooms available for up to five members, perfect for a family holiday. Furthermore, the hotel is just as close to Elounda Beach which is also worth visiting in the area.

Agios Loukas Beach

Agios Loukas Beach is a small sandy beach in a secluded cove in Kolokithia, hence why it is often named Kolokithia Beach.

The drive to the beach itself is magical, passing windmills, canals, and a bridge. The beach itself is small but organized and surrounded by rocks and olive trees.

Kolokithia Beach is renowned for having one of the clearest waters of the beaches in Elounda, easy to swim in, and is great for snorkeling. Remember to bring along your snorkeling gear to capitalize on the visibility.

There is a local tavern, an elegant restaurant, and a small café nearby if you decide to stay all day. If you are interested in historical landmarks, the Sunken City of Olous is worth visiting where you can see the remains of the city and enjoy a refreshing drink at the bar.

Elounda Island Villas are a family-run accommodation located 2km from Kolokithia Beach. There are several one or two-bedroom apartments available for between two to four people. Suites also have sea views. It is eco-friendly and furnished.

Enjoying The Beautiful Beaches In Elounda

Elounda beaches are definitely worth visiting if you are ever in the area. Some of the beaches here are not only beautiful but also well-organized with plenty of amenities, making it easy to spend a day by the sea.

If you are traveling with children, there are beaches with playgrounds and shallow waters, as well as beaches with water sports facilities. In addition, you can always easily check out the other beautiful beaches in Crete.
